      Sky continually messing with my line

      I have been connected to Sky for around 1 week now,

      Previous to sky I used BE broadband where I got 12-13mbps with a ping of 18ms.

      Here are my current sky stats;

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 12576 kbps 990 kbps
      Line Attenuation 36 db 19 db
      Noise Margin 7 db 7 db

      I am happy with the speed but my ping is 45ms, I have sent around 10 emails now to sky with replies all trying to get to 12mbps with a ping of 30ms.

      I am aware that they don't use Fastpath, I asked them to switch off DLM on my line, however yesterday I tested this by unplugging the router a few times and my speed dropped to 10mbps with a ping of 52ms.

      I have spoken to someone today on the phone who said I am set at 8 for the max delays on a gamer profile and wouldn't change it. Said that was the best they could do even though it has been better before, they don't want me ringing to tell them my line is un-stable, well surely that is my choice to have seen as though I am paying, my line was perfectly stable as well.

      I might cancel as I can't see me ever getting what I want from the line before someone or some system turns it back down again and puts me back to square one....... again.

      Feeling a little frustrated on my opening post on Skyuser, I have emailed sky and told them exactly what I want from the line but I don't think I will get anywhere at all with what I want.

      If sky have suggested you're on a 'gamer profile', then that suggests you're on sky's new network (SVBN). There are a few people who have reported on this forum having lost speeds since being moved to sky's network and I've came across a few myself.

      Regarding the pings - I get pings of 39-41 or thereabouts on wireless pinging bbc.co.uk with max delays at 8ms and much better with ethernet connection. Are you gaming wirelessly?

      I have a PS3 and a 360 connected directly to the router via cat 6 cable.

      My speed is great but my ping is not ideal at all, a shock going from 18ms to 45ms, I will settle for 30ms as that is what I used to get on Be if my line was on Interleave.

      I hate the fact that someone new reads your email or answers the phone everytime, makes things really longwinded and yes the phone is connected to the test socket and blah blah blah.

      Here is a ping from my wireless Netbook;

      Minimum = 43ms, Maximum = 44ms, Average = 43ms

      These are some snippets from what they have done on my line;

      I've also set the max delay at 8 to improve gaming.
      Your line is set on ADSL2 which gives a faster connection as we don't use Fastpath.
      DLM has also been (at your request) disabled on the line.
      DLM was not running on your line however, the profile had been set to "gamer" profile

      What I dont understand is that how can my line speeds drop if DLM is not on my line

      Re: Sky continually messing with my line

      The easynet network is nowhere near as good for pings as the Be/O2 one.

      With Sky there is a real postcode lottery with pings some people have them quite low and some have them in the 100's and some people unable to game at all.

      Even if you asked Sky to turn off DLM if you keep on unplugging the router and DLM isn't off, the system will see that as lots of disconnections and will cap your line accordingly.

      Any reason why you left Be for Sky?

      I had assumed that they were going to be ok for gaming and there was a cost incentive also.

      At the worst I thought I would get 30ms ping with 12mbps, however its a daily struggle to keep my ping below 45ms.

      They swear blind DLM is off however I don't believe them, I would be happy with 12mbps and 30ms ping, however even if this happens I doubt it will stay that way for long.

      I have noticed lag in MW2, as stated I had 18ms before moving, so I have an extra 27ms that I could do without. I think every ms counts when most games are hosted by American users.

      Why don't you believe them? the main issue is likely to be the fact you're on the SVBN...

      The reason I dont believe them is that when sky rang me yesterday they said DLM is off, I said so that means say for example I get some bad weather and the line drops a few times I wont get lower speeds or any changes on my line?

      Yes that correct

      So I rebooted my router twice yesterday to test this and my line dropped 2mbps and went up to 52+ ms.

      The main point is that my line will do 30ms like it was yesterday and I dont want them adjusting my line at all after its where I want it to be.

      Remember at different times of the day noise on the line will be present so the line trains in at the best speed it can for the default SNR...a reboot first thing in the morning would show if you were actually capped or not...

      I checked the line this morning and it re-connected at 10121K, my ping remained on 52ms until sky changed the line again just after.

      I would have thought the line would change on the line training but not the ping, I would have thought the ping would have to be manually adjusted?

      Sky offer rate-adaptive dsl, so it depends on the noise present in regards to what speed you'll sync in at. It won't be sky literally changing the figure, but simply your router negotiating a different sync speed for the noise present.
