      Vaio won't connect wirelessly

I've now spent the best part of 5 hours trying to sort this including a 90 min call to Skys broadband helpline which ended with them admitting defeat.

      I have:
      Sky's black netgear router
Home PC (Dell) wired in running on XP perfectly.
Two laptops (HP and Advent) running Win7 connected perfectly via wireless in seconds.
Sony Vaio which I've been given, running Vista, connects when wired into the router.
However running wireless I can access the router via192.168.0.1.
Everything comes up as connected and running fine but it will not access the internet.
Reports that it cannot find the server for any site entered.

Is it an issue with the wireless card in the laptop Intel 3945ABG (I've downloaded and installed the latest driver)

This is slowly driving me mad so any help gratefully received.

Ok, so if you can access the router settings page whilst connected wirelessly, I assume you get 0% loss when pinging the router, so essentially the wireless connection exists.

How about if you open command prompt (start > all programs > accessories > right click command prompt and run as admin) and type:

      ping Google

What are the packets sent, received and lost?

      Re: Vaio won't connect wirelessly

Just a quick thought off the top of my head and you've probably already tried but have you checked the lan settings to ensure the proxy box is not ticked? It just reminds me of a problem a friend have with a lappy he was given that had been used on a works network.

in case you dont knoe open internet explorer then go to tools/internet options/connections/ lan settings. make sure there is no tick in the proxy box and make sure automatically detect settings is ticked. (that's if you're on an ordinary home metwork of course!)

      hope that helps

      Re: Vaio won't connect wirelessly

Pinging Google gives "request could not find host Google"

Using Firefox and no proxy setting is checked, (meaning it is not using a proxy)

Type ipconfig into command prompt and reply with the results you have for your wireless NIC.

      Re: Vaio won't connect wirelessly

      Thanks for the help guys.
Sorted it after a visit to a pooter saavy friend who is also on Sky.
Although I thought I had checked it earlier in the troubleshooting process (in fact I'm convinced I did )
It turns out the DNS had been changed though how and by who I have no idea.

A few hours of my life that I'd like back
