      saw somebody with an estimated speed of 4mb hitting the full 20 a couple of days ago, i believe attenuation was 16db

      Not all lines are the same quality mate.

      I saw someone on a 15km line receiving 3mbs.

      Attenuation of 16 means the line is probably in and around 1km.

      Argh, trust my mum to buy me an ethernet cable instead of a DSL cable. I should get it later today and I'll post results from the master socket

      don't buy a long DSL cable, Ethernet cable is the correct thing to buy if you're buying longer cables...

      don't buy a long DSL cable
      No reason why you shouldn't, provided it is good quality. Don't buy a flat telephone wire type as this is no better than an ordinary telephone extension. Get a twisted pair one, these will give you up to 15m with little drop in performance.

      Personally, I prefer a 1ft DSL cable with Ethernet from then on, but that's my choice

      That's fine if you are only connecting one device, but if you are connecting more than one, then you need to add a switch.

      That's with 3 PCs connected and a USB hub - running to 4 rooms in the house...we don't like wireless you see!! LOOOL!!
