can someone please explain this to me?

im on sky connect(boo) I checked my router stats and was showing a downstream of about 128kbps. I then removed the faceplate and plugged into test socket my stats went up to these:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.0 db 15.0 db
Noise Margin 10.3 db 28.0 db

I then removed orange wire and then screwed faceplate back on.
I then checked my stats again and they were still high, not the previous 128kbps.
how come the stats did not go back to the low numbers as I was not plugged into the test socket anymore??

You have answered your own question, you removed the bell wire (pin 3) from you extension wiring. It can make quite a different, but I've never heard it being that spectacular, did you have something plugged in that was not filtered before as well.

no i dont think so, these good stats came up whilst plugged into the test socket BEFORE i removed the ring wire. (note: I only noticed an increase of speed the following day!) does it take a while for everything to sync then?

If you were plugged into the test socket then you have bypassed the ring wire. The ring wire is connected to the front part of the cover you removed to get to the test socket.
