      Sync Question,

      Hi,

I signed up to Sky Broadband when they offered the 'Max' package which provided a max download of 16mb and upload of 768kb I think.

I've always synced at around 12mb down and my upload has never been higher than 764.

With the new 20mb service shouldn't I get better speeds? I'm not convinced I'd get anything better download wise but surely given my stats my upload should increase to somewhere closer to the quoted 1.3mb.

      Stats are:

Connection Speed 11661 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 29 db 14 db
Noise Margin 7 db 15 db

Anyone know what the problem could be or am I missing something in my understanding?

      Many thanks
      Nick

      Re: Sync Question,

hi nick, your line should be able to support 16mb but it seems a low noise margin may be preventing this, did you have the router connected directly to your master socket when you took these stats?

could you try and post up your stats again from your test socket please?(How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket)

      Re: Sync Question,

That attenuation won't support 16mb, it should maybe get a bit more but unless the line is very good I cannot see 16mb being acheivable.

Post your stats again from the TEST socket to rule out any internal wiring issues and remember, you are on an UPTO 20mb package, that means anything from 1mb - 20mb, there are people on here getting a fraction of your speed.

      Re: Sync Question,

      Hi,

I'm already connecting to the test socket at the master.

It's a new house. a new overhead line was installed between the pole and house.

I appreciate I may be at the limit of downstream connection speed given the noise/attenuation but with attenuation of 14 and noise margin of 15 shouldn't my upload speed be a lot closer to 1.3 mb?

I seem to be 'stuck' on 764kbs up. This was the earlier max for the package - do all the exchanges now support 1.3mb up?

      Thanks
      Nick

      Re: Sync Question,

Yes, you should see a bit more upstream.

With your attenuation you should be seeing around the 14Mb mark with a decent line, have you tries the test socket to see if that improves things. Yes you can get more upstream speed but not 1.3Mb with sky no one seems able to get this with sky you would need someone like o2.

I achieve a speed of 13Mb on a 42db line, so you should have some improvement to come.

      Re: Sync Question,

      Hi, many thanks

How do I go about getting better upload speeds though?

Shouldn't this happen automatically or is there a problem I need to have addressed?

I'd have thoughy my upload could increase quite a bit but is the upload linked to the download in some way?

      (already in test socket)

      Thanks
      Nick

      Re: Sync Question,

unless DLM does it you'll need it done manually by Sky over the phone...

for future reference what am i missing here? =S

ive seen people with higher attenuation that that connecting at 15-16mb, surely if there was an improvement in the noise margin 16 mb would be possible???

      Re: Sync Question,

To be honest on a good line with a higher noise margin 16+mb would be possible with that attenuation but at the moment with that noise, it won't go up, the noise margin would have to be around 14db to see 16mb.

It is more the case of unless it is a new line then age will always start to take it's toll on the signal.

I get 18.5mb with an attenuation of 23 with a filtered faceplate fitted.
