3 days in to new service, speed went up to 8meg, but it can go higher, but seems to off stopped, I can not help feeling it is because of the noise margin sitting at 1db...

any one got any better ideas?

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8189 kbps 789 kbps
Line Attenuation 21 db 10 db
Noise Margin 21 db 1 db

Can you get the stats again from the TEST socket? (see quick links on the left for details)

You are still in your 10 day training period so the speed may increase more and your downstream should be near the 20mb mark according to your attenuation but the upstream NM is a concern.

      Re: Funny numbers

      Test Socket results are

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8189 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 21 db 10 db
Noise Margin 21 db 1 db

it briefly sat at 8db then dropped back to 1db, it is a brand new installed line, only socket in the whole house, they ripped the old line out, and run me a new 1 from the telegraph pole...

what are your thoughts, as you say I should be easy around 17mb, but that 1db can not be right surely?

Just tested with a different filter as well, just in case, same story, sits at 8db for exactly 1min 30 secs, then drops to 1db?

      Re: Funny numbers

looks like a line issue, upstream is rarely seen to be affected as it's the first part of the dsl signal and what's left is your downstream so chances are its a line fault...

      Re: Funny numbers

well what an absoulete mess, explained to tech support, to be fair he was on the phone to me for 1 hour trying to resolve it, finally after trying test sockets different routers different wires, he agreed it was a line fault..

he then went and did a line check, no surprise came back as no errors, so he was trying to say it was my issue..

I explained to him it was a brand new line, only 1 master socket etc etc, he went away and spoke to his supervisor who agreed that they would book an engineer as it was a brand new install...

so now waiting for a call from the CST team to book said engineer, he did unlock my line and I connected at 19MB which was nice, he then reduced it right down and still the upstream sat at 1db...

however I keep dropping out of internet know, which is a concern as it did not when I was at 8MB?

      Re: Funny numbers

the dropping connection is cause they've uncapped the line it's now going to fall over left right and center - DLM in this instance was doing its job of trying to keep the line stable whilst a line fault is fixed...another reason why DLM should be left to run its first time...

      Re: Funny numbers

I said that to him, and he disagreed, he kept saying I would have this issue if he reduced me to 1mg...

perhaps I just did not notice before as I am now, but I agree with you, I am sure when it was at 8meg it did not fall over
