      Noise margin up and down!

Hi all, over the past week I have noticed that at times web pages are slow to load.

      my router stats are:
      NetGear DG834GT [Sky Firmware] V1-White

      System Up Time 09:36:22
      PortStatusTxPktsRxPktsCollisionsTx B/sRx B/sUp Time
      WANPPPoA2057525649014877409:34:52
      LAN10M/100M10517685402033509:36:19
      WLAN11M/54M2381719634062613909:36:12

      ADSL LinkDownstreamUpstream
      Connection Speed10235 kbps606 kbps
      Line Attenuation28.5 db14.7 db
      Noise Margin5.8 db21.5 db

What I have noticed is that my noise margin goes from around 6.4 db to around 1 db every 30-60 seconds. Is that normal, I dont know much about the technical side but i've had sky bb for about 3 years and this is the first time i've had a problem. I replace my master socket with a filtered face plate about 2 months ago and until last week I had no problems with web page loading.

Has anyone got any idea's about the noise margin?

      Thanks for looking.

SNRs dropping too low causing errors and thus slowing your throughput. Unscrew the filtered faceplate off and plug in the router with a filter directly into the test socket and re-post the stats.

Sounds like you are getting noise spikes, is there any noise when you are using the phone, pops etc

Also try direct into the test socket just to see if there is any difference.

Re: Noise margin up and down!

I'll take the plate off tomorrow and try the test socket. There is a slight hissing noise on the phone line, it had been really crackly during the recent snow and I was going to phone sky (I have sky line rental) then the cracling on the line stopped.

      Many thanks for your replies.

As advised, try the test socket first and if it still continues in there ring Sky and report a line fault.

A common problem at this time of year, made worse by flashing lights. If you are using a filtered faceplate, either it is faulty or not fitting properly. You should be syncing much higher than you are(15-16Mb) if you are on Unlimited. Your figures look more like Everyday. Try the test socket and if there is an improvement in the noise margin. Go back to the faceplate and slide it on and off a few times and make sure it is firmly fixed in place. If you then get a higher noise margin without a speed rise, phone Sky and ask them to configure your line for Unlimited.

If you don't get a rise in the Test socket, the problem is with your external line, call Sky Phone Help and tell them you have a noisy voice line.

Re: Noise margin up and down!

      Hi,

I tried with the face plate off just now, these are the results I got:
      System Up Time 26:56:38
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 1141 1235 0 2447 13353 00:01:31
      LAN 10M/100M 48934 40154 0 449 79 26:56:35
      WLAN 11M/54M 44807 35163 0 439 78 26:56:28

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6016 kbps 608 kbps
Line Attenuation 25.0 db 18.5 db
Noise Margin 13.2 db 21.0 db

The noise margin goes from around 9 to about 14 every minute or so. My connection speed is down aswell.

With the face plate back on these are my stats:
      System Up Time 26:51:11
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 2297 2480 0 1190 7020 00:06:01
      LAN 10M/100M 46862 38277 0 433 76 26:51:08
      WLAN 11M/54M 44807 35163 0 441 78 26:51:01

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10238 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 28.5 db 14.6 db
Noise Margin 6.1 db 21.0 db

My speed is back up but the noise margin goes from around 8 to as little as 2.

Does anyone think this is a faulty faceplate or a faulty line? Like I said before everything was ok till the snow came last week then the line on the phone went very crackly, the line is clear now except for a slight hiss.

      Many thanks for your help.

Re: Noise margin up and down!

Keep it on the test socket for a while and keep a check on the noise margin. If it keeps bouncing then it's an external problem or the filter in use.

I think the line noise during the snow is the root of your problem. When the noise puts in another apperance (as it will if this bad weather continues) contact Sky, as you pay your line rental to them, and report the line noise. When that is repaired your BB will also be o.k
