What have Sky done to my phone line?

I have sky Talk and everyday broadband, a couple of girls from Talk Talk called around earlier trying to sell me broadband, I gave them my phone number so they could do a speed check on the line, They called Talk Talk who checked the line and said Sky had "scrambled" it so I wouldn't be able to change service providers, is that true?

You've probably been moved to the SVBN (sky voice & broadband network) onto sky's equipment as opposed to renting off BT.

Only for a fee, you will have to pay to be connected back onto a BT line.

Don't take too much notice of TalkTalk, they would do exactly the same as Sky and put you on their network which you would also have to pay to get away from.

Ok, Thanks, If I did decide to leave Sky, would I have to go back to BT first, or can I connect directly with Talk Talk etc?

Re: What have Sky done to my phone line?

You would have to pay a reconnection fee to get put back onto BT, some providers will arrange it all for you, some will say you have to get BT in first before they will touch it. Obviously this would then put you back into a contractual period with BT if you have to go back to them first.

It would appear that if I leave Sky, I will lose my existing home phone number, is that true?

Re: What have Sky done to my phone line?

Yes, I think that is true.

I would however advise you take a good look at some of the TalkTalk problems before you go with them. I would never use them! Some people have spent months trying to get off their service.

Re: What have Sky done to my phone line?

BBC2's working lunch did a big piece on them a while back about their own network and how much it costs to get free of them, and they asked Ofcom why they allowed this to happen and they got a load of waffle.

Now Sky has done the same I expect another expose sometime next year.

I'm not a big fan of BT but I refuse to move my line rental away from them.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

Re: What have Sky done to my phone line?

Is there anyone that is worth moving to?
I just want to reduce my monthly outgoings (currently 36.94)
I don't really watch Sky TV
