The cable enters about 4 foot away from the corner of the roof. From inside, I can follow the cable starting from the master socket, but then disappears below the rafters. If I can get closer without falling through the ceiling, I will take a pic of this.

Asked my next of kin and he confirmed that the cable does not split.

      Re: Retarded Broadband... why me?

Just used a dialup cable to the test socket and has made no difference. I have now plugged the router downstairs, but this time I am using a non branded netgear router (DG834G V4) and have set the adsl mode to G.DMT.

As you can see it's a major improvement. It's as if the further away I connect the router from the master socket, it syncs faster. I also tried this router in the test socket and the speed was 1200kbps with 40 attenuation.

      Can anyone explain this?!?!?!?!?

      1200kbps with 40 attenuation.
What was the noise margin? The original attenuation in the test socket was 37dbs, this should have given you about 13Mb.

There is one other thing you can try and that is to get your friend who fitted the phone socket to go into it again and reverse the wires on the A-B terminals. I have to emphasise that this should make no difference, but I read in another forum that doing this transformed a very bad connection. As you have tried everything else, it may be worth trying.
