Slow for the past few weeks.

      Hi,

A few weeks back my internet speeds went from acceptable to a snail's pace. Before I phone them up for a chin wag I thought I'd see if I could get any help here first.

Just so you know, previously all 3 users of our household could be using the network with no problems. Browsing is painful. If I want to watch a youtube video or anything I may as well put the kettle on each time. As for download speeds I've been getting 50kb/sec rather than the advertised 10mb (I know it's never 10mb but it's never been THIS bad!). We live near Birmingham if that helps.

      Connection Speed 511kbps 606kbps

Is your problem. Your profile says Base, if so you are only connected at a quarter of the potential speed you would get. Base is 2meg

If you are on Everyday or Mid, then that would be upto 10meg and as you have a better attenuation than mine, I would say you should see at least 7meg ish

Has anything changed your end re telephone wiring etc?

You could post your stats from the test socket

As far as I know nothing hardware related has changed. I also tried swapping the filter around with a spare. Same result.

Re: Slow for the past few weeks.

You seem to have an issue with your internal wiring as your noise margin has now shot up when using the test socket.

How many extensions do you have and are they all wired to the faceplate of the test socket?

Are you using a microfilter in all sockets in use?

Do you have a Sky box connected to the phoneline and if so make sure that its cable splitter is plugged in to filter and not the other way round.

Re: Slow for the past few weeks.

The downstairs socket splits to an upstairs socket and to a landline phone. The upstairs socket has the filter which connects to the router and another landline phone. Router connects to a PC and an Xbox360. My other computer uses wireless and my parent's laptop uses wireless (now and again). It's been like this for ages.

Re: Slow for the past few weeks.

How is the upstairs socket wired to the master socket, is it wired to the faceplate or is it a plug in extension?

Plug your router into the master socket (via its normal position not the test socket) and post the stats for comparison.

This seems to suggest that the downstairs phone is not filtered, which it should be. Buying fitting and using a filtered faceplate would go a long way to improving your connection.

It is split with a cable that goes upstairs into another faceplate.

I tried what you said and recorded the stats when the router was plugged in downstairs with no extensions or phones involved.

No, you have to sort out your internal connection first. Sky can't do anything about that. Your figures indicate that you should easily get 7-8Mb, maybe more. Buy, fit and use a filtered faceplate, this will solve your internal wiring problems. When you have done that phone Sky tell them you have improved your wiring and they will increase your speed.

If you can leave your router in the Test socket, you can phone Sky now, but be aware if you put it back as it was before, your speed will drop.
