      Massive Speed Drop.

My line speed has dropped from around 4.5 megs in the last couple of days. Are Sky messing about with my line, saw a lot of fuss in another thread but that seemed to be about Sky broadband & phone switching. Nothing has been changed and I have rebooted the router.

      ADSL Firmware Version 7.03.01.66

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream

      Connection Speed Downstream 817 kbps
      Upstream 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 55 db 35 db
Noise Margin 5 db 13 db

Figures look the same as always, I'm stuck.

You have a very low noise margin, where are you plugged into?

      Re: Massive Speed Drop.

We only have the one master socket, I have a 5metre (square plug) cable connecting my router to it.

Just turned on my PC and my noise figures are now 14db downstream and 13db upstream.

Is it something at my end that can do this?

yep - get rid of the DSL cable and use supplied by Sky...if the SNR stays high then it's capped due to issue with the cable you're using now...

Another long line being stuffed by ADSL2+?

The cable could be contributing, but I doubt is it is responsible for such a sharp drop in speed, unless it has developed a fault. Is it a flat cable like standard telephone extension? Plug in the cable supplied by Sky and post your stats.

      Re: Massive Speed Drop.

The cable that runs from the micro-filter at the master socket to my bedroom is a quality thick silver one. The one that came with my router was too short so I bought a longer one and that goes from the router to my PC.

I have bought a 10metre grey Cat6 cable and was thinking of plugging my router directly into the filter at the master socket and running that back to my PC, but I am not sure what difference that would make speed wise.

You were right, seems the cable was being crushed by the fridge. Pulled the thing out and tried another way around and the line is back to normal. Still have some homeplugs on the way and will give them a try - fed up with wires all over the place.
