      Engineer Install Query

      Good evening,

I had broadband installed by a BT engineer back in ~2001 when 512k broadband was first out and the only method was to have an engineer visit (before the splitters were available).

My question is, with all the buzz of the i-plate going around or removing the bell wire, will this be necessary in the case of my installation? I would advise what faceplate I have in more detail, however this is situated in the depths of my loft (a bungalow conversion - so very awkward to reach) but from my recollection, it is a double socket (1 for broadband and 1 for a telephone). A link to an example is here - Fitting ADSL microfilters | How to Share a Broadband Internet Connection | Hardware Upgrades | Tutorials

      Many thanks in advance

      Andrew

      Hi

That is an ADSL Filtered faceplate and as such should do the job perfectly. All an iPlate does if I have understood it properly is effectively disconnect whats known as the ring wire.

FAQ I-Plate or Filtered Faceplate ?

If you wish to do this yourself its really simple, but don't attempt it at all if you are not competent.

My BB was also installed by a BT engineer many moons ago. I still had to disconnect the bellwire though!

How is your router connected to it? If it is with a flat telephone extension type cable, you may benefit by replacing it with a high quality twisted pair cable.

I don't believe the old type filter faceplates had a bell wire filter incorporated, the new type do. It may be to your advantage to remove the ring wire from terminal 3 on the faceplate, or replace the faceplate with a modern one. I would not even consider an iPlate.

Yup! All the iPlate does is 'disconnect' the bellwire. Something you can do yourself in two minutes, as TomD says!
