Thumbs down Usage meter on Sky

Did we really want Sky to implement a usage meter?
I only read and rarely send e-mails and surf the net but my usage meter says that I have used 1.29GB-12.9% of my 10gb allowance in 4 days.
It does not compare anyway near what my Thinkbroadband usage meter says.
In my opinion, all the people who demanded that Sky put one on their site has succeeded in doing is making a tool to scare people into upgrading to unlimited.
      Sky must love you.

I think you must mean 1.29 Gb, but even so if you are just sending emails and browsing this cannot be correct. The first thing you have to ask is if your wireless connection is secure. You could have someone using your connection without your knowledge. If you are sure your wireless connection is secure, or turned off, you should contact Sky immediately as there is obviously something wrong.

I thought usage period was meant to be just 30 days - mine says 29-Oct => 9 DEC !!!!

Usage Tool says usage period is "normal billing period". Do other people have just 30 days? Any ideas what's going on?

Mine shows over a month as well, for the first period. For the OP, after about 5 days, including being online most of Saturday, with some downloads (not films, podcasts, program updates etc) I've only used 0.83gb which I would say is about right.

Thx. So you reckon 40 days is only for first period?

Yes, my dates are 29th October to 5th December, my phone and broadband bills run 5th of each month to 4th of next, so it seems period 1 is just to bring it in line with billing dates which makes sense.

      Re: Usage meter on Sky

If you look right at the bottom of the tool page you should see something like this-
Last updated:......Next allowance starts in: .........Allowance this period:....GB and % used:
      23 Nov. 09:41................8days..................................10GB ............................1.00GB = 10%

To me this means my period will start again in 8 days, even though the meter actually only started at the end of last week for me, they are still allowing me the full 10GB. Nothing I used before the meter started has been counted and the meter will return to zero in 1st Dec..

Exclamation Re: Usage meter on Sky

I am also having problems with this SKY Broadband usage tool.

I am connected at 1752kbps (Skyuser Speed Test) which gives me a maxium downlaod of 0.012531GB per per minute. My SKY router (Netgear DG834GT) status reports a connectivity of 2047kbps.

My billing/usage period is shown as 16/01/2010 to 16/02/2010 and my download allowance is 10GB.

On 16/01/2010 15:44 the tool reported that my download total was 11:44GB. Which is there or thereabouts the maxium I could achieve, at my current connectivity, assuming that I was downloading all this time continuously, which I wasn't. Why do I think that this is not a coincidence?

My Laptop is the only device allowed to connect, wirelessly through the router and it was offline all this time. My other PC's connect through a switch, hardwired on a firewall protected secure LAN.

I then continued to monitor the tool with the following results:

On 16/01/2010 16:00 it reported that my download total was 21.36GB
On 16/01/2010 21:29 it reported that my download total was 18.40GB
On 17/01/2010 01:26 it reported that my download total was 51.72GB
On 17/01/2010 02:48 it reported that my download total was 20.89GB
On 17/01/2010 14:10 it reported that my download total was 57.81GB
On 17/01/2010 23:06 it reported that my download total was 39.02GB
On 18/01/2010 11:20 it reported that my download total was 84:16GB.
On 18/01/2010 18:24 it reported that my download total was 64.68GB.

      Two interesting points:

The SKY usage suggests that more data can be downloaded that the current bandwit
      his able to process!!!!!
The usage tools seems to indicate that is is possible to download less cumulative data than previously reported!!! Time warp data logging, that's a new concept.

A more disturbing point is that SKY are using this tool to determine whether we have exceeded our usage allowance and then automatically upgrade our subscription, at extra cost. Surprise, surprise!!!

It appears to me that the SKY Usage Tool is about as much use as a "chocolate fireguard". Unless you are SKY and wish to generate extra revenue.

And I thought I had problems Laurie !!!!!

I suggest you ensure that you log right off your laptop and PC every time they're not in use - maybe you have some un-known program that is polling information continually from the net ?

Also, you can check your usage in real-time by clicking the network icon at bottom right hand corner and choosing "show networks", then find your internet connection and "view network status" - it will show bytes in and bytes out; if increasing rapidly then it isn't SKY that's mis-reporting !!!

      Re: Usage meter on Sky

      Thanks.

Here what you're saying but that would still not explain why the the download volume is greater than the maximum throughtput for the bandwith in use.

Between 17/01/2010 and 18/01/2010 for just over a 12hr period it reported an increase of 45.14GB. Assuming a continous download for that period the maximum possible for my bandwith would be 9.2GB. 45GB would take over 2 days. It also does not explain a decrease between reports.

      PS
      What OS are you running.
