      Is this right?

Have just joined today having found this site a couple of days ago.

At the moment our broadband speed seems to be jumping around and was wondering if anyone could explain what is going on.

      I did this speed test:

and at the same time got these figures from the router

      Down 3776kbps
      Up 448kbps

Then on mybroadband speed test I get

      Down 345kbps
      Up 303kbps

Yet yesterday mybroadband was giving readings of over 1900

looks like you're on Connect, which is traffic shaped during peak hours (5-midnight)...

      Re: Is this right?

Put a bit more detail on why I was asking.

We bought a couple of Windows 7 p.c's and found the wireless dongles didn't work so moved the router upstairs. Was working fine at around 1900 kbps. Then dropped to 160kbps. Phoned Sky they said nothing to do with them but suddenly our speed was back! Still was slower than we had seen as normally around 2800 kbps which is what our line is meant to have as a max speed. Phoned Sky and they told us about checking the router stats. Since then we have been running speed tests and checking the router stats. What we have found is that if we have a good speed test figure we can watch film trailers without buffering but once it drops we get lots of buffering despite the router stats remaining high.

Anyway our latest speed test is now faster than we were told the line could do.

      Re: Is this right?

You are on the Sky Connect package that suffers very bad throttling during peak hours 5pm-midnight.

Nothing you do your end will change this, the only option is to move to another ISP, if you can, go to an ISP that has their own LLU equipment in place.

That is because 09.11am is not within the peak period, try it again at 9 pm. You will be lucky to get 400kbps.

Even at that he shouldn't get 0.4mb at peak times - Seems a bit heavy.

      Could it be the VP?

Not sure what Sky did (if anything) when we phoned but even now I'm still getting reasonable results.

      Sky wouldn't of done anything.
Your stats are fine though, it's what they should be.

How heavily do you use your connection? I mean do you do a lot of downloading?
How many computers are running at any time you run these speed tests?

      Re: Is this right?

Don't download very much. My wife uses Facebook a lot and I tend to spend time looking things up. The other day when the speed tests were very poor just looking things up was taking forever. We have run speed tests with both computers on then repeated with only one on which doesn't appear to make much difference. Sky did get my wife to press the reset on the router which lost us some speed straight away but is back now. But even then it didn't go as low as the first time we phoned them.

Still don't understand why the router stats don't vary as much as the speed tests, which seem to give a more accurate guide as to what we can really expect. Sky said to ignore the speed test results but they seem to give us a good idea of what we can do online.
