If you have extensions and they are properly wired to the master socket faceplate, there will be a difference when you remove the faceplate and plug into the Test socket. You will not see a difference in the speed as your connection is capped, but there will be a difference in the other figures. If there is no difference, something is wrong with your internal wiring.

how your SNR is that low on 1Mbps i really dont know!! with 48 db line attenuation for the downstream, you should be hitting around 6 - 8Mbps!! 1Mbps is poor, sky messed your line up by the sounds of it, or your wiring has a problem!!

Re: Speed drop from 4.5Mbps to 512kbps

Following all the suggestions I spent this evening changing router cables and unplugging/changing microfilters et voila :

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3168 kbps 608 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 29.5 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 18.0 db

Looks like I may have had a duff filter after all that, strange plugging into the test socket didn't change it tho' !

Still not the 6Mbps we'd hoped for but a great improvement.

I'll keep my eyes on it and see if it settles down.

      Thanks everyone.
      Neil
