      Websites blocked

      Hi All

I'm wondering if my ISP (Sky) has blocked certain destinations for me.

If I try and go to warez-bb.org or rapidfind.org from my Mac I get an 'unable to connect' message from my browser. Other websites browse and work fine.

If I use another computer on my same internal home network, both sites work OK.

It's not a home firewall isue and i've tried flushing DNS cache and using a different IP.

Can this be Sky blocking my iMac's MAC address from going to these two sites?

      Cheers, Mega

      one more thing:

If I use a site like anonymizer.com then I can get to both the blocked websites.

      Cheers

It sounds more like a problem with your imac than anything else.
As you say another computer on the same network works OK.

Sky cannot block an individual machine on your network. This can only be done in your router, have a look at the Block Sites and Firewall rules section of your router and see if anything is there. If you have siblings/spouse, one of them could be messing you about.

Failing that the security settings in your Mac browser are probably stopping you. Have a look in your Hosts file and see if they have got into it. - http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2009...osts-file.html

      Re: Websites blocked

      Cheers for the help.

Agree - it's not looking like Sky problem.

      The hosts file is fine.
      I've tried new DNS servers.

When I run a snoop on the outbound traffic I see a DNS lookup for the site I want followed by a DNS looked for a site called stopbadware.org.

If I run peerguardian on the MAC it complains of a hijacked IP when I try one of the blocked sites.

      Re: Websites blocked

Have a look at this article. Stopbadware is supposed to be a defender of the internet, whose purpose is to warn users of dangers they will encounter on dodgy sites, like the ones you are visiting.
      StopBadware.org - About StopBadware

I did not think they had the ability to redirect searches and if they are, they may be exceeding their remit. You must have installed it with a toolbar or such like without realizing it.

      Re: Websites blocked

      fixed

It was peer guardian running on my Mac.
Even when it's not running or removed from the machine it appears to do something to ip filter or local routing tables.

Made some config changes and it works now regardless of what peer guardian status is.
