Exclamation Subscribed To 20MB, Only Getting 6MB?

Hello there! Just joined the forums for a little help here really.

We've just upgraded to Sky Unlimited 20MB broadband and we are only getting around 6MB download speed, and 0.70MB upload speed. It also states on the router status settings that the maximum DownStream Connection Speed is 6439kbps and the maximum UpStream Connection Speed is 798 kbps.

So is there any way at all I could improve this speed??

Would getting our BT line rewired help?

I don't know, any suggestions at all on how I can improve this? We live quite close the the exchange too! Its about a 10 minutes drive away, is that so far away for it only to be 6MB?

      Line Attenuation:
      Downstream: 42.0 db
      Upstream: 23.9 db

      Noise Margin:
      Downstream: 7.2 db
      Upstream: 15.8 db

Also is anything going to happen soon where it will all be fixed and made better?

      Thanks.

Post your stats, from the normal postion and from the Test socket. Details on how to do this can be found in the last 2 links in the SkyUser Quick Links box in the left hand column on this page.

Cool, I just updated my original post with the stats when in normal position:

      Line Attenuation:
      Downstream: 42.0 db
      Upstream: 23.9 db

      Noise Margin:
      Downstream: 7.2 db
      Upstream: 15.8 db

Will test from the test socket soon.

      a 42dB attenuation won't get you anywhere near 20Mbps - 7-8Mbps tops...

Re: Subscribed To 20MB, Only Getting 6MB?

About the only way you can get a lower attenuation is to move house closer to the exchange, which is probably not feasible.

It does not look too good, your test socket stats show your internal wiring is not effecting your speed. Can you check that when you are in the Test socket, any other extension sockets you may have are dead.

Also have a look around outside and see if there are any obvious faults with your main cable, exposed wire or splits in the cable.

Any noise on your voice line?

What do you mean by checking if any other extension sockets you may have our dead??

Re: Subscribed To 20MB, Only Getting 6MB?

In a nutshell, your phone line enters the house to the master socket and from that point any other sockets are classed as extensions. Now, if you have a test socket, you should notice the back of the faceplate had wires jumpered into the back of it - these are the wires running to your extension sockets (usually run socket to socket in parallell)...

Basically, with the test socket exposed, the other sockets in the house should have no dial tone - if they do, then the wiring in the house is incorrect and will be dragging speeds down...

BUT, you still won't get anywhere near 20Mbps without moving nearer the exchange...
