Angry Slow download speed with ie8 and firefox

I am asking this question on behalf of my son who has Sky broadband mid.
he has fitted the bellwire fix and the router shows connected at over 8000 kb which is better than my talktalk of 7000 kb.
at my house his laptop Vista premium will do the speedtest at 5946 download
but when he tries it at home he gets less than 2000 ?
he has tried all 3 pc's 2 Vista and one XP using wireless and Cable but they give similar results.
I can see there is a firmware upgrade for the DG834GT v1 (white) but will not be able to see if it is fitted till this evening.
I also can confirm that his MTU for both wireless and Ethernet were at 1492 and the basix vista tuning for TCP ip has been done.

If anyone can suggest to the cause of good connection speed but rubbish download I would appreciate any suggestions.

the firmware of the router is V1.03.87
      Router Status

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.0 db 16.0 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 21.0 db

If we connect to Test socket the noise margin increases to 11.4 for download

      but speedtest.net

Are you absolutely positive your son is on the mid/everyday package? The stats are the max on the connect package which is traffic shaped during peak times.

Put your son's postcode in the link above and check whether LLU services are available, specifically sky/easynet. If not, then he is on the connect package - would he suggest the download speed is quicker before 5pm?

Re: Slow download speed with ie8 and firefox

My son was getting up to 6-7 meg download until about a month ago and on odd occasions he can get a spurt of 2-3 for no apparent reason but usually it is around .5 to 1.5 max
he pays as far as he is aware the 5 extra for the mid package.

      details from My Broadband page

      Your Sky Broadband
You have Sky Broadband Connect which offers a maximum download speed of up to 8Mb

      Speed Estimate
When you purchased Sky Broadband, we estimated that the maximum download speed for your line was: 6.0Mb
and the router syncs at 8124 kb

      Conclusion of problem.
      =================

On sunday morning started test at 7.00 am 6.5 meg
      same until 11.58
      at 12.30 oooops 0.8 meg
rang sky and got to specalist straight away.
quote " there is nothing i can do if I sat here all day. unless you opt for 20 meg package and then ypu can get 6.5. I suggest you switch to another ISP that is not BT 'managed' such as believe it or not TalkTalk who have there own equipment" so he canceled and is now switching to TalkTalk and they say he should get 14 Meg !!!!! that I must see.
Thanks for all the comments at least my years in IT were not wasted on TCP/IP I did not think of BT strangling all the sky users at fixed times

Re: Slow download speed with ie8 and firefox

Just going back to your original post, the increase in the noise margin when you use the Test socket shows that the internal wiring is causing a reduction in the possible sync speed. This does not matter on BT, but when the line is moved to TalkTalk it could make 1 -2 Mb difference in the connection speed. I would advise fitting and using a filtered faceplate to get the full line potential. - XTE-2005 Filtered Master Faceplate - ADSL Nation

TalkTalk also use a very different MTU compared to other ISPs. When you eventually set up for them, make sure you make the necessary changes as this can severely effect the speed.
