      General Help with Sky Broaband

Hi, im switching from O2 broadband Access because of the terrible speeds and ping we would get, and then it would get ridiculously slow during peak times.

We have got the Mac code from O2, ordered sky broadband 20Mb unlimited

Now we are waiting for the router to come through and the activation date

do you know roughly how long this would be (the time of which we would get the router and the time of which from getting the router until sky broadband is activated)

also, i live 1.6 miles away from my exchange, can you give me a rough estimate into what kind of speeds i might be getting

also i play PS3 and im wondering if the Ping is good because that is the most important thing into gaming

Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks

      Dale

It is really impossble to give a speed estimate based on being '1.6' miles from the exchange'. You could be 3 times that difference in line length, depending on how your line is routed. Your attenuation figure would enable a more accurate estimate to be made.

The Sky routers are normally delivered in 3-5 days.

I just hope for your sake you're actually going onto Sky LLU as if you're going on Connect then it'll be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire!!!

Post your current router stats and maybe we can give you an indication of what to expect from Sky.

also i just got a letter from sky saying that we will have everything sorted by 29th of December, which i think is ridiculous, i didnt expect anything more than 2 weeks max from when i made the phone call ordering it.

To get your routers stats from O2, login to your O2 router (http://192.168.1.254) using the SuperUser account, click on the links Broadband Connection and then DSL Connection then click on the Details link on the top right. Cut and paste the info displayed.

29th December does seem like a long wait to have your Broadband migrated to Sky, although it could be just a nominal date whereas the actual date will be much sooner, are you getting your line rental switched over too?

Re: General Help with Sky Broaband

sorry neilmcl, what details do i use to login exactly?

also yes, the letter said 29th of december, so we rung them up and they said that it did seem a little odd that it was so far away, so they are going to contact us soon.

Are sky unlimited having any major issues with peak time speed drops atm? because i know that O2 are and i find it ridiculous, the time when i go onto my PS3 is during peak times and the connection is terrible, spoils the game.

Re: General Help with Sky Broaband

The good news is that Sky LLU is suffering no problems with capacity, has no traffic shaping and should run at full speed 24/7.

The Sky Connect package which is a similar setup to O2 Access (both use BT's equipment) suffers very badly which is why we wanted to make sure you were not going on it.

Login to http://192.168.1.254/ username = SuperUser, password will probably now be the serial no. of your router (in uppercase - CPxxxxxxxxx ), either that or the old default of O2Br0ad64nd.
