      Odd pings from wireless PC

      Hi everyone!

I have recently noticed that I'm getting some odd pings using speedtest.net. I'm testing my connection on the London server (Namesco). I used to get a consistant 89ms. However, recently I have been getting varied pings on both LAN and WAN, more so on WAN.

I am receiving 74ms, 88ms, 89ms and 104ms. 104ms is the most frequent ping. However, pings to other servers such as Maidenhead and Milton Keaynes are consistant at about 57ms - 59ms. Any ideas? Is anybody else having this odd outcome?

I'm on Sky Broadband Max (now Unlimited) at 3Mbps down and 416Kbps up.

I have said it before and I will say it again, speedtest.net and its offspring are rubbish. If you want to check your ping, use a command prompt. You will not get pretty pictures, but it will be accurate.

I think you mean you are getting poor pings on the WLAN, not the WAN, which is the Internet. This is normal for wireless, it is never as consistent as ethernet.

Using the CMD I'm getting pings of 27ms and 28ms?

Why would there be a huge difference. I'm pinging Namesco - Domain Names, Hosting, Dedicated Server Solutions and Broadband ADSL, Namesco Limited which is the London server Namesco.

If the CMD is my true ping then what could be the cause of a high ping at speedtest.net and the like?

I can't say more than my first sentence in my last post. When it comes down to it, the only pings that count are those to your games servers.

Seeing as my 360 gaming is mostly P2P anyway, with some exclusions, this is useless lol. Thank you anywa =D.

Who said 360 gaming is P2P?

You log into Microsoft Live servers.

As advised using Speednet etc to try to establish your pings is pointless, the sire is used as a speedtest site and not a very good one at that. Traffic is backed up and pings will be way off.

Your true pings are much closer to your CMD pings.

A player hosts the game, hence why on Halo it says "selecting new host" and kicks those with poor ping if the game becomes unstable.
