Re: Boy is this SKY connection slow

So I had a BT guy install a new master socket and wiring back to the external junction box.

      Still think Sky BB sucks.
Every 5 or so pages I try to browse, my browser stalls and wont load the page. I have to refresh 3 or 4 times to get a page to load. Some shopping sites are just unusable. This occurs on both IE and Firefox latest versions. It also occurs on both my windows XP pc, and my Mac laptop on both Safari and FF.
Its very annoying, and I dont know what else to try now.

      ANy ideas anyone?

Having a think about this one, perhaps check your routers MTU setting is 1500, I know for a fact that can affect pages and sites loading properly, other than that it could be an iffy router... will keep turning the cogs lol

Wireless or ethernet for starters. Stats are fine so it's not a line issue, have you got a firewall installed? This may just be a faulty router if it's on different PC and different browsers unless you are doing something like using opendns or specifying a proxy on all the PCs.

Did the BT engineer fit a new NTE5 socket? Did he wire your existing extension into it? If the answers are yes, remove the bottom faceplate and plug into the Test socket, take your stats from there and post them.

Your connection is now on G.DMT, when you are moved back to ADSL2+ you should see an increase in your sync speed, probably to near 10Mb..

With regards your slow browsing, Please run a speed test from Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester then boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try another speed test from Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester Post the results of you 2 tests. The tests should be done using a wired connection.

Can you advise what OS you are using?

Yep, router MTU set at 1500, I am beginning to suspect a faulty router.

The same issue occurs from both my desktop Windows XP pc with ethernet cable in to the router, AND on my Mac laptop over wi-fi.
I havent changed any DNS settings or using a proxy server.
I am running Zone Alarm firewall which I have had for years with no issues with my previous ISP and router.

Not sure what an new NTE5 socket is, but anyway he didnt wire any existing socket in to it. Its a totally new connection from the junction box outside my house. Here are my stats from the test socket:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7616 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 26 db 12 db
Noise Margin 10 db 21 db

WHat do you mean by "when I am moved back to ADSL2+" ?

My issue isnt actually 'slow browsing' as such. If you read the OP its about a delay in some webpages loading. all the speed test I run give expected results, its just that some sites/opages dont respond unless i refresh the page several times. WHen I am on a site that does respond properly , the speed is fine, not an issue.

I am running WIndows XP Pro SP3 on my desktop and MAC OSX 10.4.11 on the laptop

Re: Boy is this SKY connection slow

I am running Zone Alarm firewall which I have had for years with no issues with my previous ISP and router.
A recent poster found ZoneAlarm was slowing down his connection considerably. Try disabling it and check your browsing. This will obviously not be the cause on you Mac.

Not sure what an new NTE5 socket is, but anyway he didnt wire any existing socket in to it. Its a totally new connection from the junction box outside my house.
Click the Test socket link in my sig below. If I understand you correctly you now have only one working telephone socket wired to the external junction box? There is something wrong somewhere as your sync speed should be almost double what you have.

WHat do you mean by "when I am moved back to ADSL2+" ?
Your latest stats seem to indicate that you are on G.DMT, whereas the first stats you posted were ADSL2+. This may be a clue to your problem. If Sky have not moved you back, and I don't see why they would, your line is jumping from ADSL2+ back to G.DMT by itself. There is another post where a user is experiencing this and Sky do not know why it is happening. It seems to be a fault either at the exchange or in the router. As you are on Sky Rental you have probably been moved to the SVBN, which is causing problems for many users.

You should phone Sky and ask them to reconfigure your line, tell them your wiring has been improved.
