Not connected yet - but receiving signal

I recently moved home, got the B.T line connected Thursday last week, phoned Sky the same night and ordered Sky Broadband.

I'm a previous customer so have a router which the operator suggested plugging in so I can see when its activated (quoted upto 15 days).... received my letter to say connection will be active from the 9th.

However, I'm receiving an internet service from Sky on my router - its only 2mb but it works - so we've been using it.

Its occurred to me today though that the previous customer 'might' be getting charged for our usage? Our eldest son loves his Xbox Live so is probably using loads of bandwidth.

I've heard Sky leave the line open when a customer leaves - but will they be charged for our use?

once an account is closed it is closed, it may just be that BT didn't unplug the line at the exchange end. The ex customer should not be getting charged for your usage if they closed the account correctly when leaving.

Don't worry about it, the other customers account will be closed but as you say, the line will still be connected to the exchange until it is allocated to someone else.

The good news is you have a temporary connection for now

Post your router stats and we should be able to see what speeds you will eventually get.

Re: Not connected yet - but receiving signal

Thanks for that, didn't want them being charged for our internet heavy family lol

I'm not sure where to find router stats - is it these?

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2043 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.5 db 19.0 db
Noise Margin 14.3 db 27.0 db

I'm in an LLU enabled area if that makes any difference? (whatever that means lol)

It looks like the previous user was on Base, or was capped. You should be good for around 10-12Mb, but I would have liked to see a higher noise margin. Plug into your Test socket, link below, if you have one and post your stats from there.

Thanks Isitme.... would be awesome if I did get that speed but Sky have quoted 3.5mb.

I'll try the BT test socket thing tomorrow and post the stats afterwards

That is rubbish, it is time they updated their 'guesstimator'.

Ok, I've connected the router to the 'Test Socket' and these are the results:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2043 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.5 db 18.7 db
Noise Margin 24.0 db 27.5 db

You should see near 14mb with those stats.
