No, that would be like having your cake and eating it.

You can get a router that will allow QOS where you can ensure that one PC downloading can only use a certain speed thus leaving some left for others, also some download programmes like Newsleecher will allow you to limit their download speed for the same reason.

      Re: speed sharing

There are a few out there but I think most of the Billion routers do QOS and reports suggest that they work very well with the Sky chipset in the exchange (unless you are on the new SVBN).

Just check the specs for QOS.

I also remember seeing a ethernet hub on here not long ago for cheap money with QOS, I think there was a link via Amazon for it.

      Something like this-
      ZyXEL Dimension ES108A 8 x 10/100 Micro Switch with QOS: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

It prioritises traffic on a port basis, which means you can plug a PC downloading torrents into a low priority port and a surfing one into a high. This should stop the torrents stealing all the bandwidth and leave some for others. The torrent downloader will probably complain bitterly if it works as it should.

      Re: speed sharing

      Yes and no

It would be cheaper to buy the hub and you would not be breaking Sky's T&C's using it. If you got the router, you would need to get your usernam and password out of the Sky one and put it in the new one.

You could always piggy back the new router to the Sky one but if your going to do this then you may as well just get the hub.

pretty sure he means just plugging the hub into the sky router, thus giving it the nickname piggy back
