It is your line that is capped, not your IP. The cap will follow you until it is lifted at Sky's end.

You should also confirm what package you are on. Do this by going to your MySky page and look at the Broadband Details link. You could be on the 'free with SkyTalk' Base package or the Everyday.

It is likely your line has experienced a noise spike which dropped you connection and reconnected it at a lower speed. Rebooting the router brings the speed back up.

Done this left it off for 10 minutes and I got my usual connection back

      Thanks for your support
After the reboot could you repost the stats now the speed has returned back up again.

You may also benifit from a filtered faceplate if you have any extensions that is.

      Re: Ridiculously slow internet speeds

My knowledge of networking is quite good but I don't know how companies like Sky deal with access and speeds.

Sky like many (unless paid extra for) work on the dynamic IP system. As you (I presume) already aware of how this works so I won't go into details.

Taking the router offline and giving it enough time for my IP lease to expire was all I needed to get a fresh uncapped connection.

      Anyway that's what I done.

If you have any doubts feel free to express them. I did not contact Sky, if what I did did not fix it then feel free to give an estimation of the odds that Sky responded and fixed my line cap within the 10 minutes that my router was offline.

no, the IP is nothing to do with the sync speed...that's set on each line individually, and in your case set lower than it can take...

I can assure you getting a new IP did not fix it, but the odds of Sky fixing it when you were off line are roughly 2147483647 to 1.
As already mentioned, you line must have dropped due to noise on the line and resynced at the best speed it could at that time. Rebooting the router at a quieter time enabled it to resync at a higher speed.
