New Sky Unlimited member - Line tests, is this normal?

      Hi

I am a new Sky Unlimited member after having my line changed yesterday. I received all the usual paperwork prior to the changeover, it mentioned that my line will be subject to testing for 10 days, it mentioned that it would start at around 4mb.

I connected the router yesterday and ran a speed test and sure enough it downloading at 425kbs. I checked my broadband account last night from Sky's website and noticed that under connection details it states 'Line testing is not currently in progress.'??

Does this mean that I am not going to get any more than 4mb?? I was previously with Orange and was able to get a constant steady 7mb with never a single problem.

I searched the internet and someone mentioned that Sky might take a few days to start the line testing, I wonder if anyone could advise.

      Thanks in advance

I believe it can take upto 72 hours for DLM to kick in, just leave the router on all the time and it should start soon.

Thanks for the quick response, I wonder if you can help with a relating matter.... Are the line tests carried out based on what you are downloading during the testing period or are they simply based on what the router can hold whilst remaining steady?

It's based on stability. In theory they'll increase the speed until it reaches the target SNR and see how it holds over a set period. Don't rely too much on what the MySky page says, it's notoriously unreliable. Just keep an eye on your router stats over the next couple of weeks and try not to turn off your router. If it gets to a stage where there's no change over a few days then more than likely DLM has completed.

Sky should take a leaf (maybe be more than one) out of O2's book and send you a text message or email when line testing is complete.

If you post your router stats, Quick Link on left, we may be able to give you an idea of what your final speed might be.

That's a healthy looking set of stats, you've obviously got a clean connection. I'd say you'd get 7mbps or more when DLM is complete, providing all goes well.

That's the speed I am hoping for.. I was never kidding myself thinking I would get an improvement but it would have been disappointing moving providers and getting less than the stable 7mb I have been used to for the past few years..

I will keep an eye on the router stats daily and see if Sky are tinkering with the settings...... here's hoping

If nothing changes in the stats within the next few days, phone sky and they would manually reconfigure the line.

Re: New Sky Unlimited member - Line tests, is this normal?

I'm in the same boat, my line went active for 'Sky Unlimited' on Monday night. Since then my router has stayed on 4095/510. Whilst on 'Sky Connect' it used to sync at 7995kbps. I'm guessing my DLM has kicked in. Bit annoyed about not receiving a letter about the DLM, luckily I'm a member of this forum otherwise i wouldn't have had a clue!

So each day will i notice in the routers settings the speed increasing? Normally id have to reboot the router to get a faster sync, obviously dont want to do this while in DLM mode!

      My line stats are:
      SNR Margin (dB) : 14.6 22.0
      Attenuation (dB) : 37.0 20.9

      Thanks
