Thumbs down Can they automatically upgrade you?

I'm a bit worried about this email I just received from SKY:

Understanding what broadband usage is can be a little confusing because you can't see it or feel it, but everything you do online takes up some of your usage allowance. Your Sky Broadband Everyday has a 10GB allowance, which is ideal for regular browsing and downloading. But if you're doing more on the internet like downloading music, watching TV online and sharing photos with family and friends, you may find your usage allowance isn't enough.

We'll start contacting you by email if you go over your usage allowance, once to let you know you've gone over your allowance, and then again to let you know you're close to it in any subsequent month. If you use more than your allowance twice within a 6-month period we'll automatically upgrade you to Sky Broadband Unlimited, which gives you truly unlimited usage and will be more suitable for the way you use the internet.
Can they automatically just increase my broadband package (and presumably my monthly charge) without asking me?

If that forms part of the T&Cs of your contract then the answer would be yes.

I don't think it's an unreasonable stance by Sky. They are offering (i) a way to monitor your consumption and (ii) allowing you to occasionally go over the usage limit. If you frequently go over the limit then you are in the wrong usage band and moving you to the correct band for your usage seems reasonable. If you aren't happy with that then you can always choose another broadband supplier.

If they upgrade you, then would this apply?:

"You must subscribe to your chosen Sky Broadband product for 12 months"

I don't know why I can't upgrade my package to unlimited without starting a whole new 12 month contract as I won't need new equipment etc.

I don't think Sky are playing fair here and I don't think they're going to get 50 per month from me for much longer.

      Dave

PS. I was happy with my Broadband until they lowered the cap to 10gb per month.

No, you would not start a new contract, it would be a continuation of the existing one so if you only have a few months left befor the upgrade you will still only have that long left after it.

Many people were unhappy with the drop in the download limit, many have moved, some have stayed and some have upgraded, I suppose the question is what way will be best for you.

At least Sky told everyone and gave the option to leave without penalty.

Re: Can they automatically upgrade you?

      Bit tongue in cheek

No they can't - they can't even upgrade you when a customer wants to spend more money with them and requests an upgrade.

I've been trying to upgrade from 'everyday' to 'unlimited' for the last 3 days now. All the Sky salesman have said is that my account doesn't seem to be letting me update and the best they can do is esculate it and I will get a response within 72hours. About 48hours passed now, but no reponse as yet.

      Cheers,

      Nigel

That sounds OK then, but I would like some confirmation from Sky about this. I am 3 months away from my contract finishing and I can see myself going over 10gb for the next 2 months.

Is there any where in writing to confirm this?

Thanks for the glimmer of light there Smithy!

Re: Can they automatically upgrade you?

I have seen it somewhere on the T&C's from Sky when they first changed the limit.

If you are leaving in the next two months, I wouldn't worry anyway, by the time Sky have contacted you etc about going over the limit you will be on your way.
