      Sky Max Frustrations!!!

      Hello all,

Ive had my skyMAX line now for about 2weeks and all i can get is 1-2MB out of the line... Ive been to this thread ( Sky MAX - Poor connection Speed ) and had a look, but as i live in a new property I dont have what is commonly known as a 'master socket' i have a BT 'grey box' outside the front door where the BT comes to test the line (so they dont have to enter properties anymore apparently!)

So how can i test my line effectively? Its really annoying me that im paying for 20mb line and all i get is 1mb!!!

(see lots of posts with this in so i'll post too! )
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1020 kbps 618 kbps
Line Attenuation 59 db 35 db
Noise Margin 13 db 8 db

      Many thanks in advance

It's a real pain with these new external boxes that you can no longer access test socket. Can you describe you setup, types and quantites of socket, how they're being used, where is your router plugged in, etc.

BTW, just to clarify, you're paying for an "up to" 20mb service, with the emphasis being on the phrase "up to" and you do have quite a longish line so I wouldn't expect too much.

      Re: Sky Max Frustrations!!!

How can you tell i have a 'longish line' do you know where i live.....
I know the 20mb is only an estimate, but i'd like to get somewhere around the 8mb mark, i had that at my old place and that was ample.

I have three standard 'BT sockets' , traditional white with one bt phone jack, upstairs there is nothing plugged in yet, the livingroom has the router plugged in to a DSL filter along with my sky box which has a +2jack plug on the end to enable the pluging in of phones. And the box in the hallway, which i assume is the first socket into the house...as it has two sets on wires on the back of it.... has my OLD wireless phone plugged into it with a DSL filter.

Thats about it to be honest, no extension lines in the entire house. Any help?

We can tell you are a long way from the exchange by looking at your attenuation, which is quite high. That being said your line has the potential for a bit more, you high noise margin shows this.
Phone Sky and ask them to trouble shoot your line for speed. They will ask you to change the filter and be plugged into the master socket, it is better if you do this before you phone, it can save you calling back. With a bit of luck, you should get 3Mb+.

It's still quite rare to come across someone with an external NTE like yours. Out of interest is the initial internal socket (I suppose we can still call it the master) an NTE5 type such as shown in Sky User - How to test your Master Socket or just a plain socket with no removable faceplate?

Please make sure that the first thing plugged in to the living room socket is the filter and not the Sky+ splitter cable.

As Isitme explained you'll only be looking at around 3mbps on your line, 8mb is out of the question I'm afraid.

Do you have an integral garage in your house? If so try checking in there for your master socket.

I am in a new build and my master socket is in my integral garage, which I was surprised at.

      Re: Sky Max Frustrations!!!

ok, its Sunday evening, about 9pm... so (i would assume) there shouldn't be that many people online.... so why am i getting these figures...

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 419 kbps 614 kbps
Line Attenuation 67 db 34 db
Noise Margin 12 db 8 db

Its the 1/2 meg thats annoying me now!!!! ARRGGGHHH!!!
Im phoning them 2mrw and gonna give em a piece of my mind!

      In answer to questions:
      No garage...
No master socket, just a plain removable socket like any other but with two sets of cables, which says to me that its the first socket in the house as the others have one.
And filter is first in line on the living room socket then the sky line.

There has also been a very large jump in your attenuation, which may be more worrying. It could indicate a bad fault in your line.

If I were you I would call tonight, the lines are sometimes quieter after about 10 PM. You have a better chance of being put through to CST. You should ask them to switch your line back to G.DMT.

Make sure that you haven't got anything plugged into your telephone sockets without a microfilter. Remember, the filter must be the very first thing plugged into the socket.
