      Router stats

      Hi

I've been reading some threads about router stats and am wondering what my max speed is. I am a fair distance from the exchange. Stats are:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1529 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.3 db
Noise Margin 8.2 db 12.0 db

I've looked into the option of adding an iplate to the master socket , but on inspection, I've no wiring on the faceplate, even though I've got a second phone socket for the Sky box...

      Thanks

      Re: Router stats

      Hi

Yeah, the socket in the hall has the split faceplate, which I'm assuming is the master socket. The socket in the living room does not have a split faceplate and would have been added when the previous residents got sky installed.

I can see the coloured wires in the master socket, but they seem to be wired into the test socket.

Can anyone please tell me what my max download speed could be with the stats above?

      Thanks

      Re: Router stats

I think your sockets have been incorrectly wired. You should be able to get at least 5mbps but you have noise on your line and until you sort out your wiring this wont improve much.

To be sure that the socket in the hall is the master, unscrew the main part of the socket from the backplate and see how many wires are connected to the A & B terminals, if they are two pairs then clearly you living room socket has been incorrectly wired into here. You'll need to remove this pair and connect them to the 2 & 5 terminals on the faceplate.

Can I assume you don't have an alarm connected to the phone line? Also, is the sky box connected via a microfilter (not just the splitter that Sky provides) andis the filter the first thing connected? TBH, you don't really need to keep the Sy box connected to the phoneline despite what Sky tell you.

      Re: Router stats

      Thanks for your help

Two blue wires were going into B and two white wires were going into A. I've moved the ones with the thin white/blue bands and connected them to the faceplate. Both sockets are still working.

I'm guessing since the ring wire wasn't connected to the Master plug then I don't need an iplate?

Yeah, I've got the broadband micro filters fitted to both sockets.

Last week I was getting 1.7Mb/s, since last weekend it's been 1.3Mb/s. Maybe I'm being capped or under DLM?

Since re-wiring I have re-booted the router, stats are:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1529 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.3 db
Noise Margin 9.6 db 11.0 db

      Re: Router stats

Edit: Whoops, I've just read the rest of the stats. Disregard the below I typed before.

Are those stats from the test socket?

Yes you are currently capped. Are those stats from the test socket or the normal position, if not can you post from the test socket and make sure nothing else is connected except the router, via its microfilter of course.

      EDIT: Also, change the microfilter.

      Re: Router stats

      Hi

Those are the stats from the master socket. I'll try it now from the test socket, although, with the previous wiring I was getting the same results from both.

      OK, current master socket stats:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1529 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.3 db
Noise Margin 9.7 db 12.0 db

Test socket stats with telephone connector not in microfilter:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1529 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 55.5 db 31.3 db
Noise Margin 9.6 db 11.5 db

Note that I have a white extension lead into my study, where the microfilter is then fitted splitting it into the phone and modem.

The extension cable is more than likely an issue. Extension rj11 cables are not made for DSL purposes and will create signal to noise ratio problems. Post up your stats with the following in the test socket and post the stats -

      Into the test socket:

microfilter > ADSL cable* into the router

      * The short light grey telephone cable given to you by sky.

Edit: If you haven't tried also, it may be worth your while swapping over for another filter whilst you're at it.
