Sudden Speed Drop From 11mb To 1mb - Am I being Capped ?

      Hi All,

I have been a Sky Unlimited customer for the past 3 months, until yesterday my speed was great ( 11mb ) I can now only sync at 1mb.

I spoke to CST and they took me through the normal checks but we came up with nothing, he is sending an openreach engineer out to me tommorow but thats all been done before when i had initial problems syncing on ADSL2+ ( a modem change solved that one )

my attenuation is 17db and snr is 5db so all is fine there.

do you think it sounds like i am being capped ?

Re: Sudden Speed Drop From 11mb To 1mb - Am I being Capped ?

I think I might have found the answer. Send them an email and you get this disclaimer:

"To ensure we provide a sustainable quality broadband service to our customers, we continuously monitor and efficiently manage the Sky Network as a whole. To do this, during peak times (from 5pm to 12am each day), we may slow down the speed that all Sky Broadband Connect customers can get on certain applications which we consider use up a lot of bandwidth (for example peer-to-peer and newsgroups) and which have a negative affect on other customers There are no restrictions in place for applications such as browsing, email, streaming, instant messaging and VOIP during peak times. We do not put restrictions on our network outside of peak times."

If your connection slows down during these times (which is the time most of us use the internet), then that's confirmation that they are almost certainly capping you and if so, it would be time to find a new ISP in my opinion.

By the way, there are plenty of threads about this peak time problem and it is happening to people using the applications Sky claim are not restricted. I've read that Sky have admitted that Connect customers are subject to "traffic shaping" by BT, followed by claims that Sky may be unwilling to purchase the amount of bandwidth required to satisfy demand for their Connect customers. I'm not sure if this is true or not but it is worth thinking about, because it might apply to Unlimited customers as well (although how you would ever find out is a mystery to me). Having said that, the following suggests that Sky Unlimited is indeed the only truly unlimited one out there:

The OP's an Unlimited customer, this doesn't apply. Also, capping and traffic shaping (throttling) are two completely different things.

The OP seems to have lost interest or been fixed. It is nice to find out how Posters with problems get on.
