      Slow Unlimited Broadband

Firstly I know there are alot of threads like this started everyday so i'd like to thank anyone that helps me straight from the off.

Ok i've been with Sky on the Unlimited package for a few years now and used to get speeds of upto 6meg, over the last few months though it's got slower and slower.

      Here are my stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3072 kbps 582 kbps
Line Attenuation 52.5 db 36.3 db
Noise Margin 8.7 db 11.0 db

Router is plugged into the main Telephone socket and I dont have a test socket under the faceplate

Like I said any help is appreciated

      Re: Slow Unlimited Broadband

I'd suggest with the upstream that DLM has been and gone and capped the line, but you have little noise margin to push out any more speed however. If you sign into your mysky, check whether line training has occurred.

      1. How many telephone sockets do you have in the house and how many do you actually use?

      2. What is in each telephone socket i.e. filter > phone line & adsl cable etc.

      3. Make sure any filters that you have directly into the telephone socket are little white boxes that say 'phone' and 'modem' and NOT blank white splitter boxes.

      4. The 'adsl' cable (the cable that runs from the router to the filter) should be the light grey cable sky provided - if you're using an extension cable on the 'modem' end of the filter, then switch it for the sky provided adsl cable.

      5. Double check around your telephone sockets in the house for openreach/BT logos in the top left of the faceplate with the screws in the bottom half just to make sure you don't have a test socket.

      6. Any noise audible such as crackles/pops on the landline telephone?

Before replying back, if you have confirmed you have no test socket then unplug every telephony device from the physical set-up and put just a filter into the master socket with the router connected. Check the stats from there and if no change in noise margin (if it does not increase and/or the speeds do not) then try changing over for another filter and re-checking the stats.

If it is an old type socket, you may want to tryty disconnecting the ring wire from terminal 3. It is no required and can cause problems.

I think it is another case of ADSL2+ not liking a noisy line and not performing as it should. A return to G.DMT may fix it..

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have checked into my sky and according to that there is no works happening on my line at present
      1. Only one

      2. Only phone and modem connected via a filter

      3. Yep they are

      4. Again yes it is the one supplied by sky no extension needed

      5. Only have the one socket in the house and like I said it's very old and doesn't have a test socket under the faceplate

      6. I rarely use the home phone but have never had any problems with it and there isn't any noise or crackles

When i took out my phone line the noise margin went upto 15.2db

I attempted to change the filter but I tried two other filters but neither worked

It looks like you may have a faulty phone or filters.

That's good, it looks like the filter was faulty. Phone Sky now and tell them you have improved your wiring and would like your speed adjusted.

What make of Sky router do you have? Those filters that come with the Sagem are rubbish, as soon as you try connecting a phone to the same filter the noise margin drops considerably. I'd definitely recommend investing in some decent filters or better still get a filtered faceplate.
