Sky Broadband - Bannockburn Exchange - Poor Speeds

I am SKY TV, Broadband, and Phone Subscriber.

I subscribe to the mid range Broadband package giving alleged download speeds of 8MB.

I have tested my line on speedtest and the results vary between 1.6MB and 1.8MB download speed.

I have tried without success to discover the maximum download speed of my exchnage which is LLU enabled.

Can anyone explain as to why my download speeds are so slow when sky assure me that 8MB can be achieved?

      Thanks.

You need to post your stats.
To do this type 192.169.0.1 into the address bar, the username is admin
and password is sky, then at the bottom of the screen click on the buttom that says connection stats and copy them here.

20 Mb can be obtained from your exchange if your line supports it. Post your router stats from the normal position and from the Test socket, link below.

I will say if you are in one of the outlying villages like Cowie, Fallin or Plean, you are unlikely to get much speed. If you are in the Whins/StNinians/Bannockburn areas, you should be OK.

In case you don't know, here is how to get your stats.

Connect to the test socket if you have one, link below with details and repost your stats.
You have noise on your line somewhere which is slowing your connection alot.

It looks like you are in one of the outlying villages, as Andy says, post the stats from your test socket.

I don't seem to have a "test socket." Any ideas as to how I can increase the download speed? It seems fairly poor if potentially I can get 20 MB and according to my stats am getting 2 MB!

      Thanks.

Re: Sky Broadband - Bannockburn Exchange - Poor Speeds

You could get 20Mb if you live in the Old Town or Firs Cresent way, if your Fallin, Cowie, Plean, 4Mbs if your lucky. Hillpark area 12-18Mb. Depends where you stay.

If you haven't got a Test socket, it makes it more difficult. If you have extensions wired to the Master socket, take the faceplate off it and remove the wire from Terminal 3. This is the ring wire and is not required.

Please remember, as always, these services are advertised as "upto" 8 or 10mb, 20Mb etc. Your actual connection speed will depend on many factors, most important of which are line length to the exchange and quality of that line, both externally and internally within your property.

Its clear from your stats that you live some distance from the exchange and there's no way you'll be achieving anywhere near the advertised speeds. Having said that, given a quality line you should be seeing around 4-5mb.

Now getting an average of 0.6 mg download speed from Sky in an 8mg area! Horrendous.
