Should i be happy with my connection capped at 8mb?

i had my bb activated on 13/8/09 set a 4mb initially, for up to 20mb package.

when i checked the sky website yesterday it said my initial line test period was over and that the most i could get was 8mb. they warned me that it would take 10 days to do this testing, but they seem to be happy with it after 5 days.

i can download with no stability issues right up to the max connection speed.

for interest my current router stats are:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8191 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 20.5 db 9.2 db
Noise Margin 24.1 db 15.5 db

with these stats, using ::. Kitz - Max speed calculator .::, it indicates that my line should be able to handle up to 17mb. even the sky availability checker says between 10 and 20mb.

my issue is that i am not sure if they have properly tested my line or not.

i did speak to someone at sky who didnt really know what i was talking about, and kept repeating that they had tested my line and that was the most i was going to get, and to only ring them back if i had a fault.

given the router stats, and the fact i live just over 700m from the exchange (line length appears to be about 1.2km), should i be expecting a faster line speed or are they right in saying that 8mb is all im going to get?

i did speak to someone at sky who didnt really know what i was talking about, and kept repeating that they had tested my line and that was the most i was going to get, and to only ring them back if i had a fault.

It looks like DLM has struck again, you need to phone sky and get through to CST to get the cap lifted, best time to ring is after 10.30pm for best chance of getting straight through.

Re: Should i be happy with my connection capped at 8mb?

      thanks for the advice.

ive just got off the phone with them.

they went through a load of checks (making sure i had it plugged in right and all that) and then told me that even though the sky website is showing that line testing is complete, i should wait for the full 10 days, and if its not been raised by then, to ring back.

do you think i should wait, or ring back now?

and what speeds to do you think i should be getting? does the 17mb range sound about right?

who are CST? are they Customer Service Team, or should i ring the BB tech helpline?

Re: Should i be happy with my connection capped at 8mb?

I would say around the 17Mb mark is get able.
If it was me if that sky site says testing complete I would be phoning asking for the increase.
I think CST stands for Customer Solutions Team and they are the only ones who can change line setting (increase speed)
You need to ask to be put through to CST, as i said best time to try what others have said is to ring asfter 10.30pm.

      Hope this helps.

simple dlm has screwd up yet again, if your my sky page says that line testing has finished, then tier 2 (or teir 1 in my case) can and should upgrade that speed, your looking at 17meg sync rate, do not let them fob you off thats the most important bit, get them told!!

and no you should not be happy with your 8meg capped sync

Re: Should i be happy with my connection capped at 8mb?

      thanks for all your help.

rang them and first call was someone who knew what they were doing, who took some info and put me through to CST.

they tweaked something at their end (oo-oer!) and now im on 17mb.

thanks for all your help, much appreciated.

Re: Should i be happy with my connection capped at 8mb?

damn. speed has dropped to 11mb.

i had 17mb for about a day and it seemed stable, then got home yesterday and its dropped to 11mb.

would this indicate that someone has changed the cap, or is there any other explanation for why this would have happened? should i get back on to them?

Yes, it looks like they have capped you again or they have put DLM on your line. Phone them and find out what they have done. Ask them to put your line back the way it was.
