      Huge drop in speed

I have had Sky Max broadband at my house for around 5 months and it has been syncing at 19Mb/s. Sky Talk and line rental went live on my line yesterday and my broadband speed has dropped dramatically, nothing here has been changed (or even touched!).

      Router stats are as follows:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2400 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 7.9 db 8.0 db

Can anyone see a problem? I'm pretty sure my Upstream used to be higher than that and the Downstream certainly was!

      Re: Huge drop in speed

With an attenuation of 48, you would never see 19mb, either there has been a problem at the exchange when they switched you to the Sky equipment which seems likely or you were mistaken.

I think you are going to have to ring Sky. Good Luck!!!

      Re: Huge drop in speed

With a line attenuation of 48 here is what you could expect:

Estimation of your maximum rate adaptive adsl speed

      Downstream
      Attenuation 48 dB
      Line Length 3.5 km Approx

      dslMAX 5312kbps IP Profile 4500kbps

      adsl2+ (21CN) 5984kbps IP Profile 5000kbps

      adsl2+ (LLU) 5984kbps Throughput 5296kbps

Where you got the sync rate of 19000kbps from I don't know.

      Re: Huge drop in speed

      Joss,

It seems a bit suspect that the day the line rental is switched to Sky the OP reports a dramatic drop in speed, chances are that there is either a line fault in the exchange or one of the engineers has done something wrong.

      Re: Huge drop in speed

I agree Smitthy99. I was just posting up line attenuation speed estimates for reference point. Someone has dropped a clanger somewhere in the process.

      Re: Huge drop in speed

Miraculously gone back to normal now, must have been something at Sky's end?

      Stats now:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 19456 kbps 1183 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.0 db 7.6 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 8.0 db

      Cheers guys

      Re: Huge drop in speed

If you have Sky Rental you have probably been put on Sky's 'new high speed network'. This could have caused a temporary glitch while it settled into the new set up. Your stats look pretty good.

      Re: Huge drop in speed

sorry for hijacking but i know how SNR is affected with noise but the difference in attenuation in the OP two posts is massive???i know it gets a bit higher moving from adsl2 to 2+ but what could cause the jump from 17.0db to 48.0 db?????

      Re: Huge drop in speed

I would imagine that he was put onto a temporary setup during the new install process, maybe overnight if the engineer wasn't working late.

This may explain the 128k upload speed, this is usually a test speed.

I seem to remember that they did this for a week or so when they had a major repair to an exchange in the Midlands not so long ago, all the customer were put on some standby equipment during the repair to keep them on the net even though it was a minimal service.

      Re: Huge drop in speed

Sounds likely, having the new Sky Talk and Line Rental added yesterday can't have been a coincidence! Thanks again for your help guys, just glad it's back to its normal self now!
