As soon as they hang up, modem goes off and speed drops back o 512,
Does this happen with other phone calls? Try rebooting your router while you are on the phone to someone. If it reconnects at the higher speed it indicates a faulty joint in your line.

aaaha, i have just tried what you suggested and the speed increased to the below

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1088 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 31 db
Noise Margin 7 db 16 db

i then hung up and the speed is now back at

Connection Speed 512 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 31 db
Noise Margin 7 db 16 db

what sort of fault may this be and do i speak to sky or bt? or just wait for sky to ring me saturday and arrange it then?

You will have to report it to Sky as it does not appear to be effecting your voice line, BT will refer you back to the ISP. Getting someone to understand is the main problem. Try to get through to CST and explain what is happening. It is a joint in the line which is making poor contact, the extra juice put into the line when you use the phone, closes the gap so to speak and improves the broadband connection. I think it is referred to as a high resistance fault, but I am not certain.

bt engineer came out today and fixed the line, said all was ok now, plugged modem back in and it shot up to 1600kbps, put phone in also it went down to 676, then rang myself and reset modem while phone active, it shot upto 1500+ this time.

put phone down and reset modem, went to 2048kbps but didnt seem stable, have rang sky who rang me back on my mobile to see for themselves what im experiencing and they arranged for a sfi engineer to come out tomorrow am.

Just at my mums now and her speeds are awesome compared to my crappy ones, shes on the mid package.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10236 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 28.5 db 14.0 db
Noise Margin 8.1 db 18.6 db

That speed is good the max for mid package, but the downstream SNR should be higher than that, make sure the wire connected to terminal 3 behind the master faceplate plate is disconnected.

further to my problems, the bt line engineer says he has fixed the line and there is no faults showing, which includes high resistance etc, i still though have the problem of the speed increasing when im on the phone :s

If the phone is not plugged into the filter then the speed increases also, once that phone is plugged in it decrease? could it be the wireless phone thats the issue?

That points straight at the phone. Do you have another phone you could try? You might also want to try running the phone through 2 filters, see if that helps, as it may be dodgy filters.

Right, further to this i have tried the following

1: Plugged filter into face plate then had the modem plugged in and a telephone extension which leads into the living room, modem still in kitchen and a network cable coming out of modem into PC !! Phone extension in living room has a filter plugged into it and a phone plugged into filter. Speeds i achieved were 1472kbps, sky capped the line at 1.5 they said.

2: Phone extension plugged into face plate and leading into living room, 1 filter plugged into phone extension with modem plugged into relative socket, another filter is then plugged into first filter, in the 2nd filter goes the phone. Speeds achieved are at present 1088kbps.

3: Phone extension plugged into face plate leading into living room, 1 filter plugged into phone extension with both modem and phone plugged into filter. Speeds i got from this way was between 650 - 800kbps.

My question is, why would the phone be causing problems? i dont have another which i could try at present. When BT came round and tested line etc, they said the max i could get was between 1750kbps and 1800.
