Every time I visit a website Sky tells them where I live !

Almost four weeks ago I joined Sky (HDTV, broadband unlimited, and telephone). Since using Sky Broadband, I've noticed that when I visit a website, that website is able to display not only that I live in the UK but also the name of the town in which I live! And this is not the work of cookies in my browser from previous visits, this is Sky revealing my personal, Ďprivateí information to all the websites I visit.

      I am furious with Sky.

I've always been very concerned about online privacy, the thought of identity theft looms large, then I join Sky and they broadcast some of my postal address to the world.

      I am furious with Sky.

Iíve also had issues with their HDTV installation and their telephone, about which Iíve sent them three different emails Ė due to my being severely paralysed Iím unable to hold a telephone to my ear for 30 minutes whilst waiting to speak to someone. I have received not one response.

      I am furious with Sky.

I feel helpless. Sky clearly donít care about their customers, they only care about how much of our money they can filch.

      I am furious with Sky.

Sounds like the IP address look up that anyone can do with any ISP.

I think it is more likely to be something like the Google toolbar or a similar application you have installed which is 'feeding' you adverts it thinks you will be interested in. A bit like Phorm, but not so agressive. Sky do not reveal your personal information to all and sundry and certainly not to websites. You can read their Privacy Policy here-
Sky.com - Sky Help Centre>Sky.com Privacy Statement You can also find the proper way to complain in their Complaints Charter here Sky.com - Sky Help Centre>Account & Billing

Don't worry too much, what you see can only be seen by you no one else has access to the information. Rather like the infantile banner hosted by danasoft, which purports someone knows all about you, they don't, it is simply using information attached to all IP addresses. Only you can see the information it contains. I personally think it should be banned from forums, for the reason you are demonstrating, that it can cause unnecessary worry.

If you are really worried remove any browser help objects (BHO) you have installed on your PC. That should get rid of them. I hope this serves to set your mind at rest.

Don't know why, it's not them doing it!

Chances are, as others have advised it is something you have installed without realising the implications.

Or somebody is using a GEOIP file, like when you go to Amazon.com it looks up your IP against the GEOIP file and sees that it is a Sky one and that is based in the UK and points you to amazon.co.uk.

Some of the people that post here have signatures that say "you live near x" etc

all that they are doing is using information that this needed for the internet to work.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

Absolutely nothing to do with Sky.

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately I'm unable to use Hide IP because it's a Windows-only app.. I use a Mac.
