Yup. There doesn't seem to be any clear information as to what is exactly going on. How is fruitbat's info being displayed? What sites does it occur on? He says "It never once happened with my previous ISP. Now with Sky it happens frequently."... are these sites he regularly visits/visited? I thought a little more info might help pinpoint the problem.

      I have the same issue.

Didn't happen before I was with sky, but since being with them, well over a year now, I get it often.

I can't say which sites as I can't remember, but it does seem to mostly be popups linking to sex sites (which I don't frequent) telling me that there are girls in my home town (by name) waiting to do unspeakable things to me.

I think it mostly happens when I have googled something and follow some of the links.

      I don't have a browser hijack, I don't have any malware onboard.
I am well protected and scan at least once a week. I scan everything I download.

      Thank you for your input.

The members on this thread who have generously given their opinion and advice, telling me that the issue is not connected to my changing ISP to Sky, have made me think I'm getting something wrong. Perhaps I am, but as you have also had the same issue since moving to Sky, it does rather reinforce my perspective.

I want to be sure about this issue, thus I welcome all contributions.

      fruitbat,

Can you let us know what exactly happens? How your info is presented to you? Which sites does it happen on? You say it happens "frequently" so, if you can't remember what has gone on in the past, perhaps you could log what happens next time and we can take it from there?

I can see no way that Sky are responsible for the situation but with more info we may be able to pinpoint the problem.

For me it actually names the town I am in.

Never had that happen to me before I was with Sky, and I have been surfing since the Internet began and before in the bad old days of individual bulletin boards that you would manually dial up and Prestel, Micronet, Compuserve etc.

Re: Every time I visit a website Sky tells them where I live !

As mentioned above, the general feeling is that this is the advance of website using the standard info that is attached to all IP addresses.

To help prove/disprove if it is sky we need the following:

      - examples of websites where the problems occur
      - someone who has 2 ISP accounts (NewsreadeR) to perform a test to see if the problem presents itself with both Sky and the other ISP.

Fruitbat and Dogman - over to you guys to cover the first point for us all.

Next time it happens, I will be straight back here.

You watch, it probably won't happen for a long time now.

I will see if I can make it happen.

      Here is an example.

It is a dubious site, but shows what can happen.

NOTE, the site is not safe for children and McAfee warn against viewing it. Skyuser does not recommend use of this site

Yep McAfee warns not to go to that site and yep, it looks like it's just using the standard info that is attached to IP addresses.

So is anyone not on sky prepared to take a look.

I've forgotten on which particular sites it occurred, although when dog-man wrote "...popups....telling me that there are girls in my home town (by name)" it reminded me that that was one of the ways in which it occurred: I would be perusing a webpage, and along the right-hand side there would be photos of nubile women, under each of which would be a caption along the lines of: "seeking men in ******, United Kingdom", where ****** would be the name of the small town in which I live.

I have been trying to find examples which I could show you, but as I can't remember on which websites it occurred I have had no luck so far. As soon as I do I'll post a grab for you to see.

      Thank you for your help.
