10 Day Speed Test whilst router broken.

      Hi all,

I've recently moved and and on the day my sky broadband went active after three hours my old router broke! (It hadn't been 100% for some time)

Sky sent me a new one and it was perfect straight online. My concern is that during the first 5 days of new line testing I did not have a router connected.

Now I'm connected at a fairly good speed,

      These are my router stats

      DSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10234 kbps 906 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.0 db 17.6 db
Noise Margin 6.5 db 8.0 db

Now I'm on the MAX package and used to connect at about 15mb/s at the old house which was about 1.1km from the exchange and this house is about 1km from the exhange.

I spoke to sky and they said there is nothing wrong with my line 9mb is really fast and so they cant refer my to tier 2 technical support.

Should I be happy with this given my router stats or should this connection be faster?

      Any advise.

      Many thanks!

Given your DS noise margin that is much as you can get without the connection being unstable, in fact with that line attentuation, which indicates the actual line length, you should only be looking at between 10 and 12mbps so you're pretty much on the money. Can you connect the router to your test socket, if you have one and report the stats from there in order to see if there's a problem with your internal wiring.

Thanks for the reply. We only have one phone socket in the house. Its a BT PCS which doesn't have the master socket connection.

Out of the 8 wires only the White is connected to the 2 and the Blue connected to the 5.

I tried reconnecting these incase they had a bad connection but its gone up to 7.2 db noise margin now!

Looks like this might be the maximum speed I can get which isn't bad I know but its always nice to get the fastest you can especially if it just involves a little change at sky's end.

An increase in the noise margin is actually better! It's the opposite for attenuaton lol.

Still not enough to improve your speed. It could just be a random fluctuation, or your sync speed has dropped slightly.
