      You are now syncing at nearly 10 times your former speed. It will take some time for your profile to reset, possibly 3 days, but you should then see speeds up to 3.5Mb(unthrottled)

      Let's hope the ring wire alone was the cause of your poor connection.

      Could you now post your stats, so we can see if your sync rate is correct?

      Go to the router settings, status page and click the Show Statistics button. Copy and paste the results here.

      OK these are the router stats from the OLD socket I was using - my master socket is in a very awkward place and if I want to use it I'm going to have to have a serious think about where any wires can go

      any ideas why the socket I've been using for years has suddenly degraded?

      Not really, disconnecting the ring wire seems to have made the difference.

      At the moment these stats look OK. You are syncing a bit low, but if you reboot the router you may connect a bit faster. Try pulling the power plug out of the router for a couple of minutes then put it back in again. You should resync at 4-5 Mb.

      OK thanks, I'll keep running these tests for a few days and hopefully I'll get back up to around 4MB.

      If I stay around 350k does that mean I'm being throttled?

      The throttling only comes into effect about 5-11pm, you should get the full speed outside that time. When your line re-profiles it should go up, but as I said, that can take a few days. Reboot your router as I suggested, check your stats and then leave it for a couple of days.

      Actually I was just wracking my brains trying to think of why this might have happened and just remembered...

      about the time that my internet dropped, my mum contracted some malware on the pc downstairs (women and computers!) and I had to flush the DNS and pressed the reset button on the router, which I assumed restored it to factory settings.

      Do you think this might have anything to do with the speeds?

      I don't think so. Phone wiring can be OK for years then suddenly develop faults. I am just guessing but if you have had a bad storm in your area recently, that may have triggered it.
