Not madness, it just indicates that you're having some problems, possibly a REIN issue on your line during certain times of the day/night.

You could try using a monitoring tool such as routerstats lite - Internet Software to keep an eye on the noise margin over a period to see if there's a pattern.

yes but thats just it, problems that i can not fix as they are not my side of the face plate, problems that im going to have wen i ask for manual config (im guessing that even with my noise margin troubles i should still see a sync of at least 13meg as i dont suffer disconections) and i wouldnt even like to think wot bt would say if i complained to them about the noise margin especialy as there is no noise on my line.

it can only be outside interferance for which there will be no souloution.

But you probably will because if your noise margin is dropping so low now by increasing your connection speed is only going to exacerbate the problem. Sky will probably say that it's now stable so they wont do anything that'll to make it worse. Why would you complain to BT anyway, your broadband contract is with Sky and it's up to them to see if it can be fixed.

Have a read of this ::. REIN .:: and as I said monitor your noise margin throughout over a period to see if there's a pattern, maybe it's something you've got coming on during that time that could be causing the drop, if not then Sky will have to get Openreach involved to diagnose the issue which can be a lengthy process.

      Re: new conection and dlm

well dlm has finnished today, download set at 9122meg upload was 812

me being me i thought id ring sky and get a manual config, now for some strange reason teir 1 was able to help me out, and within 10 minutes yes 10 minutes i now have the following:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15180 kbps 989 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.5 db 18.0 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 8.5 db

rock solid and noise margin has not dropped, gona leave it a few days then try and squeaze a little bit more out of them i think.

just goes to show how inacurate dlm can be, also very surprised that tier 1 could help in this way (spoke to same agent all through call and was never transferd or put on hold)

      my broadband is now alive...

Nice stats - upstream is higher than my downstream. Out of curiosity, did the agent have you change filters or what raised your SNR for more speed?

      Re: new conection and dlm

never changed filters or anything, just made it clear from the start i was a bit of a geek and i new the score. i new right from the start id get around 15meg.

as for snr i have no idear, im sure sky are able to adjust this noise margin somehow, as ive seen it go up to 10 during dlm, and much higher b4 dlm kicked in, i hve done nothing to my line my end as there was nothing i could do to make it any better, its a new line straight from the pole to my house.

as far as im concernd dlm is a complete waste of time

The test will come this evening when the lines get noisier. If you are lucky, your router will hold the connection if you are not, the drop in noise margin will disconnect it and it will reconnect at a lower speed.

You are not the only one to discover how badly DLM can perform. It seems to be so finely set that the least problem with the line causes it to reduce the speed. There is a chance you got straight through to CST, unless they have given more responsibility to Tier 1 to take some of the pressure off CST.

Strange - tier 1 don't have the line management logins, unless someone pulled a sneaky and used their old CST logins.
