Router shows good speed but download very poor....
Hi Guys
Nice forum although mostly over my head I am afraid.
Have had this problem for a while. Only getting 120kbs DL on speed test consistantly. However the router stats show a decent speed.
Modem
ADSL Firmware Version 7.03.01.66
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 3776 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
VPI 0
VCI 38
Have had speed test results of high 2s in the past but this does not seem to last long.
We do not download P2P massive files. We do use windows messenger daily for video calls to father in law. Also use xbox live but thats about it.
I would be happy with enough speed to run spotify and maybe the odd bbc iplayer program occasionally but with the speed of 120kbs browsing is about the limit, and that can do your nut in.
Before i go into all the other info like line set up and router etc could you help with the following (probably dumb) question? ...
If the router stats say 3776kbs can i assume that the speed upto the router is fine therefore eliminating all the possible problems with exchanges, internal wiring etc and can assume the problem is between the router and the pc?
Complete fwit regarding most of the technical bits but if I have not included the info needed for any comments just let me know and I will get it. (p.s. not sure which deal i am on as cant find the paper work)

Hi Matt you are on the connect package the easy way is the upstream 448kbps is Sky connect can you run a Bt speed test

Just trying now, has to download j2se runtime enviroment 5.0, is that right? ( and of course this is taking ages...nooooo!)
Just found the stick regarding connect, looks like i am doomed to a useless connection...

I think you will find Java needed for most things now. The speed test copy and paste to your next post Sky will only except the Bt speed test
The problem with connect is it is a Bt rebranded product and is Traffic Shaped from 5pm till Midnight have a look at Steve's Sky Connect speedtest blog that will explain I have been doing Speed tests for awhile now. Also this is when connect Customers started to get Throttled
and then this follows on all about the connect package

Thanks Steve, was just getting into those threads when you menttion I was on connect, looks like fun.. thing is even if I complain or ask for upgrade they told me at time that this was only service available in my area. Probably explains why we had same problem on AOL...
Heres the result..

I assume the IP profile for my line means thats all they are letting through...seems wrong to me...will have to take it up with them.
Will have to see if any other services are available at our exchange now and try to upgrade

First thing how long have you had Sky Broadband Because there is a 10 day period when your line and connection are adjusted to your best possible speed This is what you are getting Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 114 kbps with Attenuation 44db you should be double the downstream 3776 kbps(DOWN-STREAM) could be more if no problems with the line so that would mean your I P Profile should be about 6500kbps to 7000kbps

had to go to bed in end....!
Have been with sky for 8 months, switched from AOL. Started ok for a few months but have had this consistant low c. 120kbs for many months now. It does not fluctuate as some people find. It stays at c. 120kbs. Very very occasionally it jumps up to its potential of c.3000kbs, however this is rare and short lived and seems random. Thought i maybe hitting a download llimit so messured it. Only downloaded <2gb per month so cant be that as sky connect ldownload limit is 40gb....
Is the Ip profile low speed outside my control? or can it be effected by issues in my house, eg router broken or house wiring problem? Would save me ripping wires out of the wall if so!

If the stats on the router are good and you are on ethernet then the main issue will be the BT profile
