Re: Router shows good speed but download very poor....

I have written to sky today to end my contract. I have been on connect since April. At the start I was very impressed with the speed but in the last month it has been appalling. I tested each day last week, at various times, using the BT speed test and found an average peak time speed of 661kbs. My line is configured at 8128 downstream and 448 upstream. At the moment I am downloading Open Office at 19.7 kbs. What are O2, Newnet, or Aquiss like?

Re: Router shows good speed but download very poor....

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
      Your DSL connection rate: 3776 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 2500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 940 kbps
The fact that your Profile is increasing probably means the BT system found a fault on your line and reduced the profile accordingly. It is now bringing it back up and if you stay stable it will rise again. Try rebooting your router by pulling the power plug out for a couple of minutes and put it in again. This should increase your sync speed and in turn your Profile.

that graph isn't accurate...im on a 46 attenuation and top end get 6.5Mbps...

it's a theory, but by no means should be taken as gospel...

Now, now girls, put the handbags away.

I think what is important to note is that the graph is based on a low noise margin, so with Sky's 6.9 margin you can probably knock 1-2 Mbs off the quoted speeds.

Re: Router shows good speed but download very poor....

      sigh....speed back down again.

Did a speedtest.net this morning at about 7am and got 3mbps...great!

Then get home tonight and it back to 'normal'...just got these results

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
      Your DSL connection rate: 3040 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 123 kbps

      No reply from sky....
Will try re booting router as mentioned and try ethernet again...

Wonder why it got so good last night and back to rubbish again... is it related to peak times..even so should not go so bad surley.

If BT are finding instability and lowering the profile can the problem be in my house or is it somethin at their end?

Re: Router shows good speed but download very poor....

It looks like you have a fault somewhere. Are you connected to your Master socket? Do you have a Test socket(link below)? If you do, plug the router in there and take your stats so we can rule out internal problems.

If you do not have a Test socket, unplug everything yoou have plugged into the phone line, plug your router in through a filter and post your stats.

Removing the wire from terminal 3 on the backplate of the Master socket can often help.

It has nothing at all to do with throttling.
