      Alternative ISPs?

      I'm finally leaving Sky!
The speeds past 4-5pm til midnight are terrible, and now even the entire weekend seems to be limitted to less than half the usual speed.

I'd like some suggestions for reliable ISPs which allow unlimited d/l and have a reasonable FUP

      Thanks in advance

Use SamKnows Broadband - Comprehensive Broadband Information to see if you have any LLU providers at your local exchange, and go for one of them, O2 if you can get it.

Do you have any LLU providers on your exchange? Most of these are better than a re-badged BT product.

      Re: Alternative ISPs?

I've just checked out O2, and I can get the Access package. I also have an 02 mobile contract so it'll actually be 1 cheaper than Sky connect (I think)

Could someone explain LLU to me? I have no idea what it means.
I'm pretty sure my exchange doesn't deal with LLU.

Is O2 a high contender then? I download about 40-50gb of stuff per month. If I go with them am I gonna have a miserable time with it like Sky? (and Virgin).

      Thanks for all the replies

      Re: Alternative ISPs?

like neilmcl said use the checker here SamKnows Broadband - Availability - Broadband Availability Checker
enter your phone number and postcode and then post the details if you have any LLU providers available (is on the left side of the page)

LLU is where the ISP has put their own equipment into the BT exchange, this means they dont have to rent out the BT equipment (so they make a saving which they can potentially pass onto customers)
The equipment they put it in is generally better that BT's current kit (till they roll out their new 24Mb equipment) so enable speeds of up to 24Mb without all the congestion on the BT hardware.

      Re: Alternative ISPs?

Whilst O2's Connect equivalent seems to be less overloaded at peak times, it's still not a great product - you get what you pay for to a large extent.

If cost is most important then O2 would be a reasonable choice. If you can afford it though then go for one of the BT resellers who provide plenty of capacity e.g. ADSL24.

      Re: Alternative ISPs?

If no LLU then try:- Plusnet, Zen, IdNet or ADSL 24, they will all be a bit more than Sky or O2 but you will get more of what you pay for as they manage their networks very well.

Eclipse used to be good, I don't know what they're like now.
