      Sky Broadband and SlingBoxes

      Hi,

Wonder if someone can help me, we have a home in the UK and abroad and was looking at purchasing a slingbox and slingcatcher to enable us to watch SKY whilst abroad.

I have SKY Broadband MAX and get 18meg download and 768k upload, abroad I get around 6meg download.

Please could you advise if a Slingbox may work? Do SKY restrict the use of slingboxes as it allows me to watch sky abroad? Or might I find my upload speeds capped after a couple of days as SKY notice my slingbox streaming?

      Thanks for any advice.

      Jon

It would certainly work, here is an article on how to set it up.
      Howstuffworks "How Slingbox Works"

My only concern is that you may not have enough upload speed for it to run smoothly. Your maximum upload would be about 650kbps, I doubt if this would be sufficient.

You say you have a download of 18Mb and an upload of 768kbps, which does not look right. A download speed of 18Mb should allow you an upload in excess of 1Mb. It looks like your line has been manually configured and they have not upped your upload in line with your download. Phone Sky and ask them to configure your upload for its best speed. If you can get it up around the 1 Mb you should be OK, even if it means loosing some of your download speed.

      Sorry,

I may have got my figures wrong, I have just taken these from the router

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16383 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 7.5 db 6.1 db
Noise Margin 11.7 db 16.5 db

      Does that seem ok?

Your speeds have not been increased yet, when they are you should get pretty near the 1.3 Mb upload and the 20Mb download. You can phone and ask them to do it or wait till it comes automatically, which could be some time.

      Re: Sky Broadband and SlingBoxes

To get the really good full screen picture I get with my internal network the slingbox needs about 4meg/sec.

So given that you may only have 1/6 of that as you wibb be uploading to your laptop you may get it to work but you most likely will only have a really pixalted screen and may only be veiwable in a small window.

The newest incarnation of the Slingbox software now has some refinements so it may be better with lower uploads.

I was just wondering, does Sky iPlayer work when you are overseas, or is it restricted to UK?

i believe its UK only unless you do some IP address trickery.

If only there was a way of testing a slingbox before shelling out 500 for the box and catcher unit only to find it may be unwatchable!

Depending on where you are going, some expat communities have web sites where you might get information. This is just an expample -
Spain : British Expat Discussion Forum

Could be worth a search around.
