In which case it is wired wrong and you have found the problem, now you have to figure what to do to cure it, wait unti Brian comes or give him a PM to have a look here.

The Sky assistant informed me of this as during the call I changed phone lines while still plugged into the test socket but didnt mention it as having an effect on the broadband. May have to contact the phone provider.

To help you further we need some help from you. Have a look where your line enters, it prob goes to a box of some sort where your extensions are wired from, or maybe your line comes in from underground and the joint is out side, could you post some pictures that may help.

Don't bother with the phone provider yet, we have a Brian who sorts all these type of messes out

& for a lot less too.

Ok I've attached 2 photos of the point where my phone line enters my home (thankfully right outside my window).

Re: Faulty connection much faster WITH tele extension?

You need the overhead line replaced, the question is how to go about getting it done. I assume that the telephone line is noise free when you check for this? (dial a single digit and listen, you should just hear a low hiss no crackel).
If the line is o.k the next step is to contact your ISP (Sky) and explain about the low speeds. As long as the line is stable, no or not many drop outs, It is unlikely that Sky would send Openreach out for a low speed problem.
My advice, Looking at the two crimps which are evidence of a previous repair, it you can get to them give them a good pull, this should result in a loss of connection of your phone so you can call whoever you pay your line rentail to, and get the line replaced.

The phone actually does carry a fair bit of noise during calls.
I can get to them yep, so are you suggesting I intentionally 'damage' the line? just to clarify.

No he was not suggesting that! Just pull the wires to make sure they are firmly connected, you might have to pull quite hard to make absolutely sure. Keep a mobile phone handy just in case they are not joined too well.

Indeed, just some amateur DIY perhaps.
