Connection Going Slow & Streaming Issues
Hello everyone, recently I’ve been having some trouble with my Sky Broadband Max connection and I hope you can help me (because Sky sure can’t - 6+ hours on the phone this week and this issue still isn’t resolved).
So let me start off by saying that my Sky Broadband connection has been ok for quite a while now. No real issues, websites going fast. I was happy. Lately though, I’m having issues with streaming services (e.g. webcam viewing, chatrooms) constantly disconnecting and reconnecting. That’s not all though, at night my connection gets so slow that it’s unbelievable.
My line syncs at 3072kbps down and 800kbps up. During the day I can download files at (give or take a little either way) 300kb/s and upload on average 40 to 70 kb/s.
At night... things get a whole lot more grim. Let me show you a speedtest I did just a few minutes ago...
These issues have only started within the last week at most. No changes have been made to my setup. Let me tell you what diagnostics I’ve gone through with Sky;
- Firewall & antivirus rules.
- Connecting through WiFi then LAN.
- Checking sync speeds.
- Having my line profile altered from ADSL2+ to G.DMT.
- Checking the open connections on both my Mac and Windows computers.
- Using different routers (Sky v1 white Netgear, Sky v2 black Sagem).
- Connecting the router to the test socket.
- Making sure the router is in the master socket.
- Making sure my routers are up to date.
- Swapping all the ADSL filters in my house.
- And there are probably more I can add to this list, but can’t quite remember.
I’m so frustrated with this, Sky keep saying they can’t do anything but all I know is these problems weren’t there a week ago. Nothing has changed on my end and I’m convinced they’ve fu**ed something up.
Really, any help would be appreciated. Anything to alleviate this absolutely rotten problem.
P.S. My router stats are as follows:
ADSL Line---------------------Downstream----------------Upstream
Connection Speed-----------3072 kbps-------------------800 kbps
Line Attenuation--------------62.0 db-----------------------31.5 db
Noise Margin------------------7.4 db------------------------7.0 db
Thank you in advance,

Re: Connection Going Slow & Streaming Issues
Have you tried a different speed tester, the one on this site for example?

Thank you for your reply, neilmcl.
Yes I have tried the speed tester on this website and also Speed.io but much to my embarrassment and joy, my connection appears to be going ok again now! I have no doubt in my mind though that this problem will reoccur and I will speed test on the different sites and show my screenshots here if you wish.

Try Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester then thinkbroadband :: Broadband Speed Test then speed.io - Internet DSL Speedtest all very good then copy all the results to your next post
What you need to do is post your router stats

Re: Connection Going Slow & Streaming Issues
Thanks for your reply as well, Steve16751.
My connection is still going ok at the moment (rather unfortunate that the only night I need it to go slow so that I can post some stats, it speeds up mysteriously).
I’m off here for now anyways. If it goes slow again tomorrow, I’ll bump this thread with the speed test results.
And also I believe I posed my router stats at the end of my original post. Unless you are talking about some other stats that I have failed to include - please clarify on this.

Re: Connection Going Slow & Streaming Issues
Same is happening with me.
Go here (you'll need to log in)
http://mysky.sky.com/portal/site/sky...adbandservices
Does it say "Line testing is currently in progress."?
If it does, it means they're testing your line to see if you'll benefit from the recent speed increases, and it's probably affecting speeds/latency.
