      Sky Connect - Speed Crawling

      Hi Guys,

For the last couple of days, our normally fast(ish) ADSL has gone completely down the tubes.

Speed test indicates 0.36 meg, web pages take forever to load, online streaming is just a pipe dream etc.

I'm aware of BT's "Traffic Shaping", and it's never been this bad before.

I've been onto another area of the site, and done a test, and the results are pasted below:

      Fixed: 1Mbps and 2Mbps available
RA ADSL: 512kbps and 256kbps available
      Exch Info: Exchange ADSL enabled
Line Info: Compatibility issue found. This could be several things eg. existing ADSL connection, pending ADSL order on line, ISDN, DACS, TPON, LLU, some alarm systems.

      That's worrying!

      Router Stats:

      Firmware Version V2.02.44

      ADSL Port
      MAC Address 00:1b:2f:a4:c7:03
      IP Address 90.207.71.56
      Network Type PPPoA
      IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
      Gateway IP Address 89.200.128.194
      Domain Name Server 90.207.238.97
      90.207.238.99

      LAN Port
      MAC Address 00:1b:2f:a4:c7:02
      IP Address 192.168.0.1
      DHCP On
      IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

      Modem
      ADSL Firmware Version 7.03.01.66
      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 7616 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
      VPI 0
      VCI 38

Connection Speed 7616 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 19 db 11 db
Noise Margin 13 db 23 db

That all looks to be ok.....

However, a few hundred yards up the road, on my way home from work yesterday, I noticed a young female BT engineer, who looked to be doing either a new line installation or replacing a cable (Cable across road, with 2 more BT guys holding it up, out of the way). Do you think it's anything they have done? (bearing in mind it's a good few poles away).

Router is plugged straight into the master socket, I'm going to swap the filter over for a spare, but I doubt it's anything to do with that, as surely the router wouldnt sync at that speed?

Any advice before we go round in circles trying to contact sky tech support?

      Cheers,

      James

PS, does anybody have a "Non-Non Geographic" phone number for Sky support?

Kids are on holidays and they will be using the broadband all day now with torrents etc and a system that was already bending is starting to buckle.

You stats are ok, I would imagine it is the capacity issue on Connect.

If you are on wireless, it may be worth trying another channel or with a wire if you can just to rule it out.

Have you checked on your exchange to see if O2 or Be have LLU in there?

Re: Sky Connect - Speed Crawling

      Hi Smithy,

My PC is Ethernet, so not an issue. We have 3 PC's in the house 1x WLAN and 2x Ethernet, and all exhibit the same problems.

The chances of our exchange being LLU'd in the near future are practically non existant! Our town has doubled in size in the last 8 years, and there just isnt the physical rackspace within the exchange. According to samknowsbroadband.com there are just over 5000 residential customers, and low 100's business customers... that's utter toss for a start, and obviously old information!

Anyway, this problem looks to be similar to the extremely large post, echoing the same problem back in 2006. Webpages are taking an age to load, if at all, the latest NVIDIA drivers have just been downloaded.... normally, I can download them at 600+K, and tonight the best speed was 15K/s!

I've spoken to most of the big ISP's, and none of them will even admit to having LLU plans for our exchange, let alone having a date.

Have spoken to our neighbours who are NOT on Sky, and they say it's all as normal. Our immediate neighbour, is on Sky connect, and guess what? Yup, you guessed it!

I’m experiencing the same problem on Sky’s Max package. Forgive my ignorance but what was the “extremely large post” problem? I only got Sky Broadband in 2007 so I wouldn’t know. Please provide links if possible as I am unable to find anything related to your post.

Over the past 2 days I’ve spent almost 6 hours on the phone to Sky Broadband tech support, and it’s an utter waste of time. No one right up to tier 3 seems to be able to distinguish sync speeds from actual download speeds. We’re out of luck and on our own. I’ve well and truly given up. If you eventually find a resolution then please let me know.

      EDIT: For clarity, here’s some extra details;

      * My exchange is LLU enabled.
      * I sync at 3072kbps down, 700kbps up.
      * I use both wireless and wired connections. Same problem.
      * I use the LVPAD exchange (Padgate).
      * Never had this problem before.
      * Tried test socket, no difference.
      * Checked all PC settings, no difference.
      * Used different PCs, no difference.
      * Can only download 100kb/s max and I lag like a bitch in online games. My ping stays low, though.
      * Tried buying new filters and swapping ALL of them around.
      * Tried a different modem, no difference.
      * Tried a different RJ11 cable, no difference.

This is a problem with Sky and they either refuse to recognise it or don’t even realise that it exists.

Re: Sky Connect - Speed Crawling

      Miki,

This is what I was referring to:

      Slow page loading times

As you can see, my ping always remains low...... but listening to planetrock.com or any streamed radio is a no no, youtube just wont even show the first frame of a video, let alone play it..... as for Skype, forget it!

If all of this is down to the infernal "traffic shaping" or capacity issues, then for download speeds to sink so low, then i'd duggest that the system is "not fit for purpose", under the sale of goods act, although it would be a hell of a battle to prove it.

Brother in law is just down the road, in one of the villages on the same exchange, and he is with plusnet (formerly Force 9) and he has no problems at all. He is syncing at a much lower speed, but is downloading at more or less his sync speed. As Smithy suggested, if it's down to spotty 13 year olds caning the network illegally downloading porn/films/music now the school holidays are here, then i'd suggest that Sky (or BT) proactively seek out and disconnect these muppets, as they keep bleating on about doing so on the news. DONT SHOUT ABOUT IT, JUST BLOODY DO IT!! Then again, I occasionally use BitTorrent to download Linux distros... would they tar me with the same brush, just for using a BT client, regardless of what I'm downloading? Hmm.....

      :-)

Your situation is not the same as the previous poster as he is suffering from traffic shaping being on connect. To get a better understanding of your problem can you post your full stats taken from the test socket.

Re: Sky Connect - Speed Crawling

If 0.30k/s is down to traffic shaping, then Sky/BT have hit new lows, and to be quite honest, I'm off.

I can get PlusNet for 24.50 a month, on an "all in" package. The TV can fall by the wayside, as I hardly watch it, and if I do, then it's usually Dave or BBC3, both readily available on Freeview or Freesat!

Oh, and Plus' Tech support have actually heard of Linux, and I had quite an interesting discussion one night a few years back with one of their tech guys :-)
