yeh i see thats its best to double check i work as a sys admin and there's been many a time when i've checked over something and ruled it out later to find it was that!
Computers are a reet pain in the backside sometimes but in this case i'd put my bet on the router or line/exchange if the OP has done the checks he mensioned earlier.

Re: Sky Mid - no more than 0.50Mb for over a year

I will boot the laptop in safe mode to see if that makes a difference.

I've reset the router many times and have even given up customising now (admin sky ftw!) as it got pointless. As i said before we did get a replacement Sagem router that didn't fix the problem and which totally died at Xmas so we're back on the original Netgear V2. It might be woth asking for another though but do sky have a limit on the number of routers they send out? I did think of taking one of the cisco 887's from work but then read about Sky's 3rd party router policy and didn't want to give them any excuse to blame my kit.

What is the best way to approach Sky help with my problem? Each time I've rung up they seem very dismissive of any fault on our line or their kit and down right refused to even discuss a sky engineer looking at kit in the exchange.

One of the very first things I asked was if they had made any changes to the exchange in the last year and they said no. I also seemed to get alot of missinformation as the first tier 2 support i spoke to told me I was on a BTW line which isn't the case (i confirmed that with another support agent).

the engineer wouldn't be a run-of-the-mill engineer - it'll involve looking at the throughputs of everyone on the exchange and not actually be anyone going there in person initially...

the only thing you can do is get to CST and hope you get an agent who's 1. willing to listen, and 2. willing to get it raised to FM for investigation...

and there's no such thing as tier 2 - how many more times doe it need to be said!!!!!

Re: Sky Mid - no more than 0.50Mb for over a year

I checked the speed in safe mode and it's still slow.

Also for the sake of completness here is a tracert to google
      C:\Users\FredThePanda>tracert Google

      Tracing route to Google [209.85.229.106]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

      1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms www.routerlogin.com [192.168.0.1]
      2 63 ms 60 ms 92 ms cr0.lsthdt.uk.easynet.net [195.189.158.124]
      3 57 ms 56 ms 56 ms 80.238.44.1
      4 58 ms 59 ms 58 ms 72.14.198.126
      5 57 ms 58 ms 57 ms 72.14.198.125
      6 57 ms 57 ms 57 ms 64.233.175.27
      7 66 ms 65 ms 65 ms 66.249.95.170
      8 64 ms 65 ms 65 ms 72.14.236.191
      9 75 ms 68 ms 73 ms 209.85.243.85
      10 65 ms 65 ms 65 ms 209.85.229.106

      Trace complete.

Also if I send a ping with some packets bigger than the MTU (which is at the default 1500) they time out,

      C:\Users\FredThePanda>ping -l 1700 Google

Pinging Google [209.85.229.106] with 1700 bytes of data:
      Request timed out.
      Request timed out.
      Request timed out.
      Request timed out.

      Ping statistics for 209.85.229.106:
      Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Is this usual sky practice or is there problem with my router?

As for the naming of the support levels, sorry if i offended you but if you want to get padantic it still is 2nd line what ever you name it as you go to them secondly after going to the 1st line.... Such as FM is 3rd as you go to them after the 2nd can't fix the fault.......

Thanks for all your help though, hopefully I'll get the kind of support person you describe above!

Re: Sky Mid - no more than 0.50Mb for over a year

Suppose you could say FM are 3rd level!!

It's possible the rotuer id knackered - if you have a 3rd party one you could try it out and see what happens...failing that it's gonna have to be a call to Sky...
