      Noise Margin when wet

      Hi All

Just a bit of advise please.. I was reading a couple of posts relating to low line noise figures possibly being associated with poor connections, low speeds etc.. then found the Sky router stats (speed, noise, attenuation) explained. Very good read!

My query relates to my particular line noise figures in that - At the moment it is raining cats and dogs here, my connection is still good, yet I have low line noise figures (below) Is this normal for really wet conditions or should the line noise figures be reasonably stable?

      Thanks for reading

      Regards

      orb

Are those stats from the test socket, if not then try from there if you have one and repost your stats you would be looking for an increase in the noise margin.

I also noticed tha your line stats are very simlar to mine.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 12095 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.5 db 23.8 db
Noise Margin 6.1 db 14.5 db

The stats where exactly the same from the test socket last night (I've tried that a few times actually) It just seems that the weather has quite an effect here as we're quite open to the elements. Things always improve again though once the weather settles down.

I'm sure things would be better though if the old lines where replaced as they're 20+ years old now. We had a BT engineer out 12 months ago who was insistant that the lines in our area had been changed, however we've lived here for 25 years and we know for a fact that nobody has ever entered our house to fit a new line, which they would have had to because the wire comes from the pole down the side of the house and in through the front wall into the hallway, so someone would have had to enter the house to fit it this end.

Anyway back on topic... Weather is improving and stats are like this today.... As you can see DL has decresed, upload has increased as has noise margin.

Connection Speed 9917 kbps 948 kbps

You may well be right in that the line has never been replaced, however it is quite possible that the overhead was replaced and the new one joined to the existing line down the wall, have a look outside and see if you can see a joint.
Lines are replaced when the pole is replaced, about every 30 years or so

Just had a look but can't see a joint anywhere. I'm not to bothered though because I'm relativly lucky in that our BB never actually drops out or anything. I just wondered mainly if our noise fluctuations where normal and within limits when the weather gets bad?

Yes the weather and all manner of things can have drastic impact on your connection. Water entering external cables and junction boxes, near by thunder storms and lightening can send ADSL connections wappy. If it later returns to normal service after heavy rain/ storms then all is well. Just an inconvenience we have to endure.
