      Ridiculously slow speeds

      Hi,
I got activated earlier on today under the Max package, but I'm getting horribly low speeds:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2240 kbps 352 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 7.8 db 6.0 db

I'm not too technical, so I'm not too sure what any of this means.
Is there anyway to fix this, or should I call sky up?

      Many thanks

      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

You have a very high attenuation on the line, that is the reason for the speed. Do you know how far from exchange you are by road as that attenuation says about 4.5Km?
Also how is the router plugged into the tel line? Any extensions in use, are all filters correct?

      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

With that attenuation you won't get much more if any.

      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

      Hi,
Yeah, I've used the filters, and no extensions. I live about 0.3miles from the exchange!

My friend lives less than 5 minutes away to me, is on SkyBB and gets about 11Mb.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

      Thanks

      edit:

OK, I changed the filters around, and there was a definite improvement in attenuation:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 11.0 db 7.0 db
Noise Margin 27.1 db 13.0 db

But still, the speed isn't nowhere as good as it should be. Any tips on where to from here?

      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

That's the normal starting connection speed for all new max (unlmited) activations. Once DLM starts you should start to see the speed increase.

      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

Haha yeah, it's awesome! Must be a faulty microfilter! Slightly worrying though, because I could've just left that in and then would've been stuck with much lower speeds!

Will leave the router on and hopefully see some improvements! 3Mb is the max I've got now.

      Thanks a lot guys!

      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

      Hello again, people!

It's been a few days now, and line testing is under way (the Sky page said that). But for a few days now the stats have been frozen at

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3069 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 14.0 db 6.2 db
Noise Margin 28.8 db 28.0 db

And clearly the dl/ul speeds aren't what they should be, but they've been like this for about the past 4 days. Should I just wait, or get in touch with Sky?

      Many thanks

      edit
I guess I should get in touch with them - they've updated the service details page with

When you purchased Sky Broadband, we estimated that the maximum download speed for your line was: 1.0Mb

      !

      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

I would be tempted to ring them and see if you can get them to manually configre or to run DLM again. Tell them you have improved the wiring as you had a faulty filter.
