      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

Rang them up, and they've now changed it and my stats indicate that:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 20208 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 14.0 db 6.2 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 27.5 db

However my actual speeds I'm getting while browsing are still really slow. Could this be because of DLM?

Download Dr TCP, just search google for it, and see if that helps. Only works if you don't use vista/win7

was DLM finished? if not looks like you got to a dim agent, possibly another one on the out soon...they also didn't bother to increase the upstream...

      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

When you purchased Sky Broadband, we estimated that the maximum download speed for your line was: 1.0Mb
There is more going on than meets the eye. When the speed estimate is done it would not matter if there were 10 dodgy filters, it should be done before they are even fitted. You should raise this with them, as if you do have problems in the future, some agents will point to this figure and say you are getting far more than you should, go away.

It seems there are some support staff who want to ingratiate themselves with customers and break the rules, DLM if allowed to run would have given you a much higher upload speed. Now if you call you may get put back on DLM and end up where you started with a low d/l speed.

      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

DLM has finished, according to the website:

      Your connection details

Line connection testing completed on 15/07/2009
      Download Speed

Your connection has been set to a download speed of up to
      4.0Mb (4096Kb)
      Upload Speed

Your connection has been set to an upload speed of up to
      0.5Mb (512Kb)

I don't think it's a computer problem, since I've tried it on my other laptop as well, and faced the same problem. I'm not sure where to go from here - do I ring them and say I'm getting lower speeds than I should, and ask them to go on from there?

      Cheers!

ok, so in this instance they manually reset the line correctly (post-DLM) so yeah just call back and say your upstream isn't right - 2 second job if you can get to CST in one go...just have patience...

as a test, go to http:www.btopenworld.com/speedtest and download the large file and post the speeds (should be about 2MB/sec)...

OK, well I'm on hold right now. Downloaded the file, got around 130KB/s ! Guess I'll just quote that to them, along with my line stats, and hopefully they'll fix it from there. The odd thing is that my router displays a good down speed, but in practice it's not achieving them!

      Re: Ridiculously slow speeds

Well, as an update, they've reset my line. The router stats are much better now -

      DownStream Connection Speed 20172
      UpStream Connection Speed 1022

Although in practice in speed tests the highest speeds I'm getting is ~ 10000, and Sky say that they don't know why that is and can't help (since the router stats indicate 20000), but it's still a much better help than before.

      Thanks for the help, guys!

If you are running XP, click the DrTCP link below and do the Tweak Test. If it recommends you make changes, download and use DrTCP.

If that does not help post back.
